본고에서는 개정된 국어 교과서와 문학 교과서에 실린 한국 대표 시인의 작품을 제재로 하여 그 시가 해당 학년의 학습자에게 적합한지를 논한다. 이 글에서 거론한 작품들은 학습자의 지적 능력이나 흥미 면에서 적합하지 못한 점이 있다. 학습자에게 적합한 작품을 구성하려면 시의 표현적 측면과 내용적 측면을 아우르는 작업이 뒤따라야 한다. 학생들은 자신의 생활 경험과 동떨어져 있거나 추상적이고 관념적인 내용의 작품을 꺼린다. 간접적 표현의 양이나 질은 물론 작품의 내용에 대한 학습자의 친숙성 또한 난이도에 영향을 미친다. 교과서 시의 위계를 정할 때에는 학습자의 발달 특성을 고려하면서 예상 난이도를 추정해야 한다. 시 선택권자는 간접적 표현의 정도, 생략의 정도, 낯선 어휘의 빈도 등을 기준으로 시 난이도를 추정하고, 학습자 수준에 적합한 위계를 정한다. 중학교 저학년에서는 의미가 분명하고 내포의 정도가 적은 작품을 선정한다. 간접적 표현이 부분적으로 나타나지만 의미를 파악하기 쉬운 작품은 중학교 2학년에, 그리고 상당한 추리 과정이 요구되는 작품은 중학교 3학년 이상에서 적용된다. 다양한 관점에서 해석되는 작품은 비판적 사고가 두드러지는 고등학교 과정에서 다루는 것이 효율적이다.

This paper discusses whether the poetry will be fit for the learners of the relevant grade. using works of Korea`s representative poets in revised Korean language and literature text books as materials. The works that this paper mentioned have corners yet to be suitable for intellectual capacity or interest of learners. Composing works that are appropriate for learners should be followed by the work which includes the expressive and semantic aspects of poetry. Students avoid the works which are far from their life experience or abstract and ideal. Not only the quantity or quality of indirect expression but also the familiarity with the content of work influences the level of difficulty. When ranks of poetry in textbooks are decided, expected difficulty level should be estimated considering the development characteristics of learners. A poetry selector estimates the level of poetry on the basis of the degree of indirect expression, the degree of omission, the frequency of strange words, etc. and then decides ranks suitable for the level of learners. For lower graders in middle schools, the works whose meanings are clear and whose degree of implication is low should be selected. Though indirect expression appears partially, the works easy to understand should be applied to second graders of middle school, and the works requiring a considerable reasoning process to at least middle school third graders. The works to be interpreted from various angles are efficient when they are dealt with in the course of high school whose students` critical thoughts are remarkable.
