청년은 대체로 20대 정도 나이의 사람을 지칭하는 단어다. 하지만 청년이라는 단어는 지시적인 의미에 머물지 않는다. 청년이라는 개념은 근대와 함께 등장한 상징적인 단어이기도 하다. 20세기 초반, ``청년``은 최남선과 이광수에게 있어 그들 스스로를 가리키는 말이면서, 새로운 시대를 열어갈 사명을 띤 세대를 의미하기도 하였다. 최남선과 이광수는 계급이나 지역의 교체가 아니라, ``세대``의 교체만이 새로운 시대를 이끌어날 수 있을 것이라는 생각에서 ``청년``을 강조하였다. 당시 ``청년``은 과거 세대를 비판하고 적대시함으로써 강력한 힘을 가진 단어가 될 수 있었다. 산업화 시대의 청년은 새로운 사회적 주체로 등장하게 되었다. ``청년``의 한 축은 대학생으로서, 또 한 축은 노동자로서 자리 잡았다. 그리고 이들은 보다 거대한 기성 권력에 맞서 싸우는 저항의 주체이기도 했으며, 이들은 민주화 시대의 주역이기도 했다. 1990년대 이후로 청년들은 점차 사회적 주체의 자리에서 밀려나게 되었다. 소비중심의 사회에서 청년은 단순히 소비의 객체로 전락하였다. 2000년대 이후 들어 ``청년``은 ``실업``이라는 단어와 연결되곤 한다. 청년은 이제 소비할 돈조차 벌지 못하는 존재가 되고 말았다. 어느 시대에서나 청년은 사회적 권력을 차지하지는 못했지만, 생명력과 역동성의 상징인 것만은 분명하였다. 그러나 최근 들어 청년의 존재는 크게 약화되고 있고, 특히 문화 예술 분야에서 청년들의 서사는 점점 위축되고 있다. 청년이 크게 위축되어 있는 상태인 바로 지금의 시대야말로, 청년들의 서사에 대한 관심이 더욱 깊어지고 넓어져야 할 시기인 것이다.

Cheong-nyeon, the Youth had never had power in any age, but been the symbol of vitality and dynamic, But lately the existence of Cheong-nyeonis weakened, especially Cheong-nyeon narrative in culture and art. Since this Cheong-nyeons are weakened, Cheong-nyeon narrative should be created and communicated more and lively.
