이 논문은 한설야 신변소설에 나타난 신경증의 여러 양상을 분석함으로써 남성 주체의 구성 방식과 현실 대응 태도를 살펴보고자 하였다. 해당 시기 소설의 남성인물은 공통적으로 약한 성격을 지니고 있으며 망상과 의처증의 증상으로 자신의 억압된 내면을 표현한다. 나아가 자신의 정신 이상 증세를 스스로 관찰하면서 그것이 비정상적인 것임을 인지한다. 이는 ``대문자 자아``와 ``소문자 자아``의 관계처럼 분열적 자아에서 기인한 것이며, 관찰하는 자아에 의해 ``비정상``적 증후를 보이는 자아는 흡수될 위기에 처한다. 또한 남성인물들은 여성 젠더의 전유라는 방식을 통해 남성 히스테리적 증상을 보이기도 한다. 이는 심리적 외상에 의한 남성성의 약화를 의미하며, 궁극적으로 외상의 기원이 일본 제국주의의 국가담론임을 반증한다. 이렇게 신경증을 표출함으로써 남성인물들은 자아의 분열을 경험하는데, 가족서사의 맥락에서 분열적 주체는 ``대문자 자아``와의 동일시를 욕망하게 된다. 이는 소설 속에서 여성인물에 대한 양가적 태도로 나타나는데, 여성에 대한 혐오와 수용이라는 과정을 거치면서 분열적 주체는 모성적 어머니와의 동일시를 이루게 된다. 그러나 동일시의 한계로 인하여 통합적 주체 역시 또다시 분열의 길을 걷는다.

This study would examine the compositions of male subjects by way of analyzing various aspects of neuroses shown in Han, seol-ya`s personal-novel. Also, the ambivalence about female gender would be especially analyzed so as to investigate the link process between complete of family romance and acceptance of national discourse. The results of the analysis showed that male subjects in his personal-novel had weak character and suffered from paranoid delusions. For example, a main character in a novel "The Waves" exhibited symptoms of delusional jealousy and feminization of men. These neuroses and male-hysteria were caused by the ideological oppression under Japanese imperialism. Han, seol-ya, who was a socialist and nationalist at the last period of Japanese imperialism, was enforced to renounce his idea. As a result, he could not adapt to reality and showed the symptoms of neurosis and male-hysteria in his works. For the purpose of treatment for neurosis, male subjects showed the ambivalence about female gender, rejected sexual femininity and displayed identification with maternal femininity. As a result, an identity of male subjects was recovered and returned to the real world. But, maternal femininity was a reproduction of ego ("ICH") and also was the other of imperialism. Han, seol-ya began to create Japanese novels after his acceptance of maternal femininity.
