천명관 소설에 나타난 초라한 육체는 자본주의에 물들어 있는 현대인들을 조소한다. 이 사회가 지정해 놓은 평균치의 성장이란 자본주의의 통과의례에 대한 무비판적 내면화에 불과하다고 말이다. 요컨대 성장이란, 자본주의의 적극적인 내면화와 동일화에 지나지 않는다. 성장했다고 믿는 자의식을 들여다보면, 그 속에서 우리는 내면의 취향을 거세했으며 살아있는 자연을 거세했다. 우리 삶의 실체는 흉내 내기에 지나지 않는다. 우리는 나날이 결핍과 불완전함을 자각하고 또 다른 내일의 평균치를 소망하면서 흉내의 대상을 욕망한다. 자본주의 사회에서 성장이라는 기획은 체제의 유지와 존속을 위한 동일화 전략이다. 우리는 사회가 만들어 놓은 통과의례를 가열차게 추종하면서, 자본주의 사회의 동일화 전략을 살아내고 있다.
