『남정기(南征記)』는 금만중(金萬重)이 한글로 창작한 원작을 금춘택(金春澤)이 한역(漢譯)한 작품으로 알려져 있다. 그 유일한 근거는 김춘택이 『남정기』한역본에 붙인 서문이다. 본고는 김춘택의 서문을 분석하는 데서 출발하여 『남정기』의 창작 동기를 둘러싼 논란을 해명하는 한편 작자 문제를 재론했다. 서문 중의 석연치 않은 몇몇 대목, 『남정기』의 구조와 제재, 『남정기』와 『구운몽』의 거리, 숙종(肅宗)재위기의 정치적 사건과 김춘택의 행적등에 주목한 결과 본고는 다음의 가설을 제시하였다. 1) 『남정기』는 숙종대인현왕후(肅宗代仁顯王后)의 폐위로부터 복위에 이르기까지의 현실 정치사건에 대응되는 ``목적소설``이다. 2) 『남정기』는 구운몽 과 상당한 거리를 가지고 있고, 특정 장면의 서술에서 전혀 모순된 시각을 드러내기도 한다. 따라서 『남정기『의 작자가 김만중이라는 김춘택의 말은 의심스럽다. 3) 『남정기』의 효용, 김춘택이 복위운동에서 가졌던 핵심적 위치, 김춘택 자신이 『남정기』의 한역자이자 『남정기』에 대해 최초로 언급한 인물이었다는 점 등을 고려할 때 『남정기』의 한역자 김춘택이 『남정기』의 작자일 가능성도 열어 둘 필요가 있다. 4) 『남정기』가 ``목적소설``의 가치를 실현하기 가장 적합한 시기는 인현왕후 복위 직전 복위운동이 절정에 달했던 때이다. 김춘택의 유배 시절 한역이 이루어진 것은 김춘택 자신의 명예 회복을 목적으로 한 것으로 해석된다.

Namjeong-gi is known as a novel translated into classical Chinese by Kim Chun-taek(1670～1717) from Kim Man-jung(1637～1692)`s original work in Hangul. The only reason for judgement is the preface of Namjeong-gi by Kim Chun-taek. I analyzed Kim Chun-taek`s preface, researched the controversy surrounding a creative motive of Namjeong-gi, and reexamined problems about the author of Namjeong-gi. As a result, I suggested following hypotheses: 1) Namjeong-gi is a purpose novel for the political target which directly reflects Inhyeon-wanghu仁顯王后`s dethronement and restoration in King Sukjong肅宗`s period. 2) Kim Chun-taek said that the author of Namjeong-gi was Kim Man-jung. But it is doubtful, because there are many different aspects between Namjeong-gi and Ku-un-mong九雲夢, and two works have a contradictory viewpoint in description of a musical performance scene. 3) It is necessary to accept that there is some possibility Kim Chun-taek is the author of Namjeong-gi, because of the political utility of Namjeong-gi, Kim Chun-taek`s position in the Inhyeon-wanghu restoration movement. Moreover, it must be considered that Kim Chun-taek is a translator of Namjeong-gi and the first man who comments about the existence of Namjeong-gi. 4) The suitable time to realize a political purpose for using Namjeong-gi is the peak period of the restoration movement just before Inhyeon-wanghu`s restoration.
