본 연구는 지난 한 해 동안 우리의 교육 현장에서 실제로 적용된 융합인재교육 (STEAM)의 여러 사례를 통합 교육과정에 근거한 관점에서 분석해보고, 우리나라 STEAM 교육의 개선 방향에 대해 제안해보았다. 우리나라 STEAM 교육은 짧은 기간에 비해 학교 현장과 과학기술계 전반에서 많은 관심과 기대가 고조되어 있으나, 실제 적용 모습을 살펴보면 중요한 문제점을 발견할 수 있다. 우리나라는 STEAM 교육을 과학, 기술, 공학, 예술, 수학 교과 내용의 단순한 결합으로 이해하거나, 각 교과와 관련된 여러 가지 활동을 제공하는 것으로 인식하고 있다. 즉, STEAM 수업을 구성하는데 있어서 핵심적인 개념이나 통합의 가능성을 가진 내용 요소를 확인하여 체계성과 연계성을 만들어내는 단계가 없다. 또한 STEAM 교육과 통합 교육과정에 대한 교사의 전문성이 부족하여 교사들이 통합의 중심이 될 수 있는 각 교과의 핵심 개념이나 기능을 판단하기 어려운 실정이며, 현재 이루어지고 있는 거의 모든 통합이 다학문적인 통합의 형태에만 그치고 있다. 이러한 문제점을 개선하기 위해서 통합적 개념을 추출해 낼 수 있는 내용 기준의 개발, 다학문적 통합시 중심이 되는 교과와 어떤 교과들이 통합에 유의미할지에 대한 논의와 연구, 간학문적 통합과 같이 더 높은 수준의 통합 지향, STEAM 교육에 대해 전문성을 가진 교사의 질적, 양적 확대를 위한 방안 마련을 제언하였다.

This study analyzed various cases of STEAM practically applied in the Korean education field for the past year in terms of integrated curriculum and suggested ways to improve Korean STEAM. A lot of interest and expectation about Korean STEAM are increasing in schools and scientific technique areas compared to its short history, but there are some critical problems in the practical application. Korea regards STEAM as a simple mixture of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics or the provision of various activities related to subjects. In other words, there is no process where organization and connectivity are made by checking core concepts or contents with potential integration. In addition, teachers lack professionalism about STEAM and integrated curriculum so that it is hard for teachers to decide core concepts and core skills of subjects that could be the center of integration, and almost every integration just takes multidisciplinary approach, To solve this problem, this study suggested development of standards for contents that can extract integrated concepts, discussion and analysis on subjects that become the center of multidisciplinary integration and what subjects would be significant for integration, higher level of integration such as interdisciplinary integration, and a way to expand both quality and quantity of teachers with professional knowledge about STEAM.
