This paper reconsidered the education of the hyang-chal(鄕札), an authentic notation system of the Silla dynasty. According to the 16 kinds of high school textbooks published in 2012, the hyang-chal consists of the two parts, the hun-cha-ja(訓借字)and the um-cha-ja(音借字), both of them borrowing the old Chinese characters. They explain that the hun-cha-ja sounds ideographically whereas the um-cha-ja sounds phonetically, and that the latter follows the former in general. However the notion of the hyang-chal in those textbooks is leading to the total misunderstanding of the hyang-chal. Most of the characters that were misunderstood as the hun-cha-ja are only the old Chinese characters in their common acceptation, and so are some of the characters that were misunderstood as the um-cha-ja as well. The structure of the hyang-chal should be also reconsidered. The hyang-chal is not composed of the hun-cha-ja in front and the um-cha-ja at the back, but the Chinese characters in their common acceptation in front and the cha-ja at the back; the cha-ja(借字) is the character that only borrows the old Chinese characters to signify Korean vernacular, being irrelevant to the original meaning of the Chinese characters.
