Korea exported automobile components worth 23.09 billion dollars accounting for 4.2% of the total export amount (555.21 billion dollars) to the overseas during the past 2011. As a result, Korean recorded a trade surplus of 17.25 billion dollars corresponding to 56% of the total trade surplus 30.8 billion dollars. This study aims to analyze the competitiveness index and trend of automobile components toward the world and Japan and the dependence of automobile components on Japan by focusing on 31 items of HSK 10 unit among the domestic automobile components. In addition, this study proceeded with a deep research on specific items (gearbox). This analysis is very effective for grasping the weakness of domestic automobile component industry toward Japan and the specific situations such as which item causes a competitiveness problem toward Japan and how its characteristics are. As a result of analysis, automobile components have never recorded a surplus in a trade with Japan. Especially, as a result of picking 10 biggest import items of domestic automobile components, ``gearboxes and their components (8708-40-0000)`` are listed as the 1st rank in a overwhelming scale toward both the world and Japan. In addition, the dependence of this item on Japan was 57.8% as of 2011, which was very high. Moreover, the competitiveness index toward Japan was －0.95, which was very low. It could be confirmed that it was inevitable to improve the trade balance of this item in order to solve the adverse condition of component industry toward Japan.
