이 글의 목적은 다음과 같은 다음과 같은 세 가지이다. 첫째, 필자는 김정대(2000)를 통해서 경남방언 구획을 시도한 바 있었지만, 그것에 대한 미비한 점을 반성한다. 둘째, 최명옥(1994/1998)적인 방법론을 수용하되 새로운 자료를 보탤 때, 그 결과가 어떻게 되는가를 검토해 본다. 셋째, 앞으로 보다 더 바람직한 경남방언 구획을 위해 필요한 일이 무엇인지를 정리한다. 이 가운데 가장 중요한 목적은 앞의 둘째이다. 첫째, 김정대(2000)에 대한 반성이다. 당시 필자는 의욕적으로 경남방언 구획 문제에 접근하려 했지만, 연구 방법론뿐만 아니라 자료 활용 차원에서 부족한 점이 있었다. 둘째, 필자가 생각하는 경남방언의 구획은 다음과 같다. 경남방언은 일차적으로 동서로 크게 나누어지니, 그 경계는 대체로 말해 낙동강 본류와 관련이 있다. 이것은 근본적으로 최명옥(1994/1998)의 그것과 일치하는 것이지만, 창원지역어를 나누는 태도가 서로 다르다는 차이점이 있다. 필자는 창원지역어를 전이 지대(transition zone) 언어로 보지만, 경남동부적인 성격이 강하다고 판단한 것이다. 경남서부방언은 다시 남북으로 나누어지니, 그 경계는 낙남정맥(洛南正脈)과 관련이 있다. 이것은 경남중서부방언을 다시 동서로 나눈 최명옥(1994/1998)의 그것과 다른 것이다. 셋째, 앞으로 해결해야 할 과제로는, 먼저 좀 더 엄격한 연구 방법론을 개발하는 일이고, 다음으로 자료 수집의 중요성을 새삼 인식하고 자료를 수집하는 일이다.

This paper has three purposes as following: First, this is a critical reflection on J. D. Kim(2000) in which the author tried to demarcate Gyeongnam Dialect area. Second, the author is interested in the result from which new data are added to the existing methodology suggested in M. O. Choi(1994/1998). Third, the author wants to suggest what should be needed for the desirable demarcation of Gyeongnam dialect in the future. Among those three points the second is the most important one. More concrete discussions are as following: First, at the time when J. D. Kim(2000) was submitted, it lacked the optimal methodology and the effective utilization of related data, although the author ambitiously tried to approach the subject. Second, the author has an idea of the right demarcation of Gyeongnam dialect on a tentative mode: Gyeongnam dialect is primarily divided into east and west on a large scale, whose boundary is roughly related to the main stream of a river Nakdonggang. This fundamentally coincides with that suggested in M. O. Choi(1994/1998), and yet it has a difference in that the two authors differently divide Changwon regional dialect. The present author thinks of Changwon regional dialect as a transitional one with a strong trend towards eastern Gyeongnam. The western Gyeongnam dialect is divided into south and north, whose boundary is related Nangnamjeongmaek(洛南正脈, a series of mountains running towards southern orientation). This is different from that suggested in Choi(1994/1998) which divided mid-western Gyeongnam dialect into east and west again. Third, what we must solve is to develop a more rigid methodology at first, and to collect data with an emphasis on the collection in mind.
