현대시의 계보를 따진다고 할 때 그 기준이 무엇이냐에 따라 다양한 방식의 계보 작성이 가능할 것이다. 운율을 기준으로 할 경우, 혹은 시에 나타난 이야기(서사성)을 기준으로 할 경우, 각각 다른 계보를 작성할 수 있다. 이 논문은 근대에 대한 시적 대응방식을 기준으로 백석과 이상의 시를 다루었다. 백석과 이상의 시는 근대에 대한 불안의식을, 내면적으로는 같지만 표면적으로 다른 방식으로 풀어내고 있다는 점을 구체적으로 드러내 보이고자 했다. 세 가지 측면에서 근대에 대한 이상과 백석의 대응방식을 살펴보았다. 첫째는 마을과 막다른 골목의 공간성에 대한 문제였다. 근대에 대한 두려움이 이상에게서 도시의 골목을 통해 드러났다면, 백석에게는 전통적인 마을을 통해 드러났다. 둘째는 과거에 대한 인식의 문제이다. 이상의 시는 전통이나 과거에 대해 부정적인 모습을 보였다. 반면, 백석의 시는 할아버지와 손자로 대변되는 과거와 미래가 하나로 연결되는, 연속과 통합의 인식을 보여주었다. 셋째는 육체(몸)와 육체의 확장된 개념으로서 가족(가정)에 대한 것이었다. 이상의 시가 자기 해체적이었다면, 백석의 시는 자기 신체에 대해 통합적, 자기 구성적인 방식으로 반응하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 이상이 근대를 견디는 방식은 근대의 첨단에 서는 것이었던 반면, 백석의 경우는 근대와 더불어 노는 것이었다. 다시 말해서 이상이 온몸을 던져서 근대에 투신했다면, 백석은 냉정한 태도로 근대에 일정한 거리를 유지해나간 것으로 볼 수 있다. 이러한 대응방식은 광폭(廣幅)의 문학사에서 둘 다 필요한 것이다. 근대에 대한 수용과 반응이라는 점을 기준으로 한다면 백석과 이상의 시는 문학사의 계보학적 측면에서 두 개의 축을 이루는 기준점이 될 수 있을 것이다.

Looking into the pedigree of modern poems, we will be able to construct it in various ways according to what the standards are. We can construct different pedigrees according to whether rhythm is set as a standard or narrativity (a story presented in a poem) as a standard. This thesis dealt with poems of Baek Seok and those of Lee Sang on the basis of ``reactions to modern times``. I tried to specifically reveal that poems of Baek Seok and those of Lee Sang describe consciousness of uneasiness about modern times in different ways on the surface but in the same way inside. From three points of view, I looked into the two poets` ways of response to modern times. The first point is a matter of spatiality of a village and of a dead-end alley. In poems of Lee Sang, fears of modern times were expressed through city alleys, and in those of Baek Seok , they were revealed through traditional villages. The second point is a matter of awareness of the past. Poems of Lee Sang showed negative images about tradition or the past. On the contrary, those of Baek Seok showed awareness of succession and integration bringing together the past and the future represented by a grandfather and a grandson. The third point is a matter of family (home), an expanded concept of a tie of bodies and bodies. While Lee Sang responded to his body in a self-dismantling way, Baek Seok, in his poems, responded to his body in an integrated and self-constructive way. Lee Sang`s way of bearing modern times was to stand on the cutting edge of modern times, while Baek Seok`s way was to play along with modern times. That is, Lee Sang completely devoted himself to modern times, while with a calm attitude Baek Seok kept a certain distance from modern times. These two ways of response are all necessary in the double-width history of literature. Based on the standard, ``acceptance of and reaction to modern times``, the two poets` works can be reference points of two axes in the genealogy of literature history.
