본 연구는 우리나라 지적장애학생들의 중등과정 이후 교육의 방향을 모색하기 위하여 미국의 지적장애학생 중등과정 이후 교육과 관련된 법률과 그 현황을 고찰한 다음, 미국의 지적장애학생을 위한 중등과정 이후 교육 현황과 실제를 분석하고, 그 함의를 분석하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 본 연구의 결과 미국의 지적장애학생을 위한 중등과정 이후 교육경로와 교육모형의 현황과 실제는 우리나라 지적장애학생의 중등과정 이후 교육의 기회를 확대하기 위하여 중등학교와 대학에 이중 또는 동시 등록 프로그램을 개발하여 교육경로를 다원화하며, 혼합·혼성모형과 통합모형을 개발하여 교육모형을 다양화하고, 이를 위하여 인간중심계획, 교육적 코칭, 멘토링 등을 제도화하는 일이 필요함을 함의해 준다. 따라서 우리나라도 최근 증대되고 있는 지적장애학생들의 중등과정 이후 교육을 위하여 미국의 현황과 실제를 토대로 미국의 지적장애학생 중등과정 이후 교육모형은 우리나라에 지적장애학생들의 중등과정 이후 교육을 위하여 교육경로와 교육모형을 다양화하고, 우리의 실정에 적합한 지원 제도를 마련하는 일을 서둘러야 할 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to review legislation and its current status of postsecondary education for students with intellectual disability in U.S.A, analyse its current states and practices and analyse out a implication to seek a way of postsecondary education for students with intellectual disability in Korea. The results of this study are as follow. First, current states and practices of educational paths of postsecondary education for students with intellectual disability in U.S.A implicate that Korea need multiple ways for expanding opportunity of postsecondary education for students with intellectual disability by not only having college-initiated program and individual- or family-initiated supports program but also developing dual or concurrent enrollment program Second, current states and practices of educational models of postsecondary education for students with intellectual disability in U.S.A implicate that Korea should diversify educational model by developing mixed/hybrid model and inclusive individual model as well as separate model, and then, to achieve these, Korea need to establish person-centered planning and systematize educational coaching and mentoring and so on. Therefore Korea must rush in preparing legislation and system appropriate for its actual condition to deal with increasing needs of postsecondary education for students with intellectual disability in recent years based on current states and practices in U.S.A.
