물리학과 철학사를 관통해온 절대적/상대적 공간 개념의 구분에 따르면, 전자는 물체와 구분되어 독립적으로 존재하면서 물체에 절대적인 영향력을 행사하는 균질적인 공간인 반면, 후자는 물체들 간의 관계를 통해 비로소 구성되는 것으로서 기준이 되는 물체의 질량이나 속도에 따라 다르게 파악된다. 그러나 20세기 사회이론가들은 공간사회이론을 펼치는 과정에서 절대적 영향력을 행사하는 권력 용기로서의 공간과 사회적 행위자들에 의해구성된 상대적 공간 사이를 우왕좌왕하는 경향을 보여주었다. 뿐만 아니라배타적 권력관계를 비판하기 위해 사회를 권력 용기로 상정했던 이론가들은 이 공간의 변화가능성을 설명할 수 없게 되는 딜레마에 빠지게 되었다. 이러한 딜레마를 극복하기 위해 필자는 이 논문에서 "관계적 공간" 개념을 발전시키고자 했다. 라이프니츠의 상대적 공간개념을 사회 이론적으로 정교화한하비의 관계적 공간개념은 행위자가 맺고 있는 다층적인 시공간 관계들에 의해 공간이 구성된다는 것을 강조하여 보여준다. 그러나 하비의 관계적 공간 개념은 현실적으로 행위자에게 막강한 영향력을 미치는 공간구조와 행위자의 여타 관계들에 의한 공간구성이 어떤 방식으로 상호작용하는지를 보여줄 수 없다. 따라서 필자는 뢰브의 공간론을 추가적으로 도입함으로써 배타적 공간구조 형성가 여타의 변형적 공간구성을 관계적 공간 개념 내부의 관계항들로 설명함으로써 이들 간의 상호작용이 어떤 방식으로 일어나는지를 보여주고자 했다.

According to the conceptual distinction of space in the history of physics and philosophy, absolute container space has a absolute influence on the objects, while relative space is constructed by relation between objects. But the social theorists of 20th century ran about in confusion of the concept of social space. Some theorists who assumed the social space as a absolute container of power failed to explain the possibility of its change. Others who tried to understand it as a construction of a relation between objects couldn`t criticise the powerful spacial structure. In order to solve these problems, I`d like to develop a concept of relational space in this paper. For that, I first will introduce Harvey`s distinction between the Leibniz`s concept of relational space and the Einstein`s concept of relative space. The former results from all of relations that the agency has, while the latter is depend on a relation in that the agency is interested. And then, I will explain the interaction between the powerful spacial structure and the other spacial practices within the concept of relational space, introducing the Low`s space sociology.
