최근 들어 도시권 개념이 상당한 주목을 받고 있으며, 특히 도시권은 경제활동의 역동적인 중심으로써 세계화 시대 도시 간 경쟁력을 비교하는 공간단위로 인식되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 도시권에 대한 개념과 적용성을 선행연구를 바탕으로 고찰한 후, 도시권을 설정하는 방법론을 구축하여 우리나라의 도시권을 설정하는데 목적을 두었다. 본 연구에서는 도시권을 설정하기 위해 통근통행, 일상통행, 주거이동의 세 가지 측면에서 지역 간 연계성을 고려하였다. 세 가지 유형의 통행권을 종합하여 분석한 결과 우리나라의 도시권은 5개 대도시권과 16개 중소도시권으로 설정할 수 있었다. 본 연구결과를 통해 도시권을 단위로 한 지역발전 정책으로 전환할 필요성이 있음을 시사점으로 제시하였다.

The concept of the city-region has attracted interests from diverse academic fields in recent years. It has been recognized as a dynamic center of economic innovation as well as the spatial unit that is compared to the regional competitiveness on a global scale. This paper critically reviewed the concept and its applicability in regional development context and constructed the methodology for spatial configuration of the city-region. The purpose of this study is to find ways to delimitate the adequate city-region system in Korea with special reference to interregional functional linkages. In this study, three aspects of the interregional linkages such as commuting trips, daily trips, and migration flow were considered. According to the combined interregional functional linkages pattern, Korea was delimitated into 5 large city-regions and 16 medium-small city regions. The results of this research give some important implications for implementing the regional development policy towards the city-region as a spatial unit.
