본 연구의 목적은 2011개정 교육과정에서 고등학교 선택과목인 화법과 작문 과목을 통합적으로 운용하기 위한 방안으로 서사화를 적극 도입할 수 있는 방법을 모색하는 데 있다. 서사는 인간을 주체로 자아와 경험과의 구성과정 전반에 관여하는 심리적, 자아 정체성, 윤리적, 문화적 측면까지 아우를 수 있는 거대한 안목을 제공한다. 서사화는 주체가 의미 구성을 한 후 표현활동을 거쳐 서사 텍스트나 담화로 나타난다. 이러한 과정은 초인지 조절 과정이 작용하고 사회문화적 영향을 받는다. 화법과 작문 교육과정에서 서사의 관련성을 찾으면 개정의 목표에는 부합하나 학업과 진로 두 축으로는 서사 담화 유형을 도입해야 하고 내용적으로 서사적 내용을 구성할 수 있는 방안이 필요하다. 통합적 구성을 위해서는 인지적 차원에서 서사적 의미 구성, 텍스트에서 통합적 서사 구조, 수행 과정에서 서사지식과 활동 통합을 제안할 수 있다.
