우리는 지금 "예술(문학)은 무엇인가"라는 질문은 더 이상 유효하지 않은 시대에 직면해 있다. "무엇이 어떤 것을 예술(문학)로 만들어주는가"라는 질문을 해야 한다는 견해에 둘러싸여 있는 것이다. 이러한 견해에 따르면 ``예술을 예술답게 만들어주는``, 소위 ``예술성``은 규정이 불가능하기 때문에 그에 대한 질문을 지속하는 것은 의미가 없는 행위다. 단토는 일상품이 예술품으로 변하는 과정에서 필요한 것은 ``예술성``이 아니라 ``해석``, 다시 말해 예술계라는 ``제도``라고 결론 내린다. 더나아가 그는 ``예술성``에 대해 어떤 말도 불가능하기 때문에 그러한 ``예술성``은 존재하지 않으며, 따라서 예술가들도 ``무엇이든 가능한`` 상태에 놓여 있다고 주장한다. 문학의 영역에서도 이와 마찬가지의 흐름이 지배하고 있다. 본고는 이러한 흐름이 놓치고 있는 지점을 보여주고, 문학성이란 무엇이며 또 문학성에 대한 연구가 어떻게 가능한지를 인지과학의 성과들을 빌려 모색했다. 이에 따르면 문학성은 ``낯설게 하기``의 효과가 발현되고 기능하는 국면에서 논의될수 있다. 문학성은 문학작품 내에 여러 형태의 표지, 즉 리듬이나 언어유희를 통한 언어의 전경화, 인지적 직시와 직시 이동을 통한 허구적 세계의 구성 및 제시, 스크립트의 제시 및 재조직화를 통한 비친숙화, 그리고 은유와 환유를 통한 새로운 인식의 창출 등으로 요약될 수 있다. 하지만 이러한 표지들이 문학의 표지로 기능하기 위해서는 이차적으로 복합적이고 중층적인 방식으로 상호 조합되어야 한다. 텍스트가 중층적인 의미를 띨 때 ``낯설게 하기`` 효과가 빚어지며, 그때 문학 작품이 될 수 있는 가능성이 생기기 때문이다. 문학이론의 논의 대상은 바로 이지점이라고 할 수 있다.
Danto `s opinion is that a question called "What is art?" is no meaning. And now, he insists to change a form of the question. He suggests that a important thing is ``interpretation``, for a discussion in art. He tries to maximize a power of ``interpretation``, and he tries to develop a new phase to the discussion. This essay tries to show the spot which this tendency is misses. This essay studies about "What is literary value?". And this essay tries to show a possibility of the question should be taken. This essay attempted to seek about a answer of the question, through a results of cognitive science. According to this study, a literary value can be discussed in a phase, that a effect of ``defamilarization`` is works. The literary value is implemented as the cover of many forms in the literary work. That is a foregrounding of language through a rhythm or a pun(a sort of game), organization(and presentation) in the fictitious world through a cognitive deixis and a deictic shift, a defamiliarization through a presentation(and reconstruction) of a script, and a creation of a new way of thinking through a metaphor/a metonymy, and etc. However, these should be combinate each other in complexly and multily, for these indexes are to work on ``the cover`` of literature. Because ``defamiliarization`` effect is occurs when a text has complexly meaning. At this moment, text become literature. This is the subject of study of literature theory, and it can be discuss in this spot so clearly.
