아프리카의 페미니즘은 여러 가지 측면에서 서구의 페미니즘 그리고 그것을 직수입한 한국의 페미니즘과 많이 다르다. 서구 및 한국의 페미니즘이 가부장제의 극복을 선차적 과제로 내세우며 "성(Sexuality)"과 "계급"이라는 기제를 최종심급의 중심에 놓고 사유를 전개하고 있는데 반해, 아프리카를 비롯한 비서구의 페미니즘은 "인종"과 "계급"그리고 "성"의 문제를 보다 중층적으로 사유하고 있다. 비서구의 페미니즘이 지닌 보다 복합적인 착종과 결절을 적나라하게 드러내며 서사를 전개하는 대표적인 작가가 아프리카의 페미니즘을 선도한 베씨 헤드이다. 본 논문은 베씨 헤드가 서구의 여성과는 다른 현실에 처한 아프리카 여성이 어떻게 자산들의 목소리를 주조해내고, 이를 통해 아프리카 사회의 중층적 모순을 심문해가는 가를 살피고 있다.

Bessie Head is one of the most brilliant feminist novelists in Africa. She interrogates western feminism from African perspective. Western feminism is believed to focus too much on gender-issue as well as class-issue excluding race-issue. By replacing these pre-established orders, Bessie Head presents new mode of thoughts on African feminism. Mavu is one of the representative works that Bessie Head created in order to show how differently functions African feminism. Mavu is a pioneering work in African novels in terms of tangibly providing the African alternative to ``subaltern studies.`` By embracing ``unheard voices`` from many diverse minorities, Bessie Head introduces different landscape of ``subalterns`` to the world map of third-world feminism. Mavu in this course takes a very crucial role. Amystic vision as an extended form of African realism explores new frontier of novel writing in the hand of Bessie Head so that Mavu is able to be accepted as the very unique feminist novel not only in Africa but also in the world.
