예술은 흔히 정신, 즉 사유 혹은 관념을 감각화하는 활동으로 이해된다. 근대들어 인간의 사유는 자연을 초월한다. 근대적 사유의 특징은 ``무한성``과 ``자유``이다. 여기서 근대 예술의 딜레마가 발생한다. ``무한한`` 사유 혹은 정신을 어떻게 ``유한한`` 예술작품을 통해 나타낼 수 있는가가 그것이다. 이 글은 이 딜레마를 둘러싼 낭만주의자(Fr. 슐레겔)와 헤겔 간의 입장 차이를 ``반어``를 통해 살펴본다. 슐레겔은 무한한 사유의 자유를 작품을 통해 드러내는 길은 ``반어``에 있다고 본다. ``반어``가 지니는 ``자기창조, 자기파괴, 자기제한``의 ``무한한 부정``을 통해 무한성과 유한성의 괴리가 끊임없이 좁혀질 것으로 본다. 이에 대한 헤겔의 비판은 두 가지 측면에서 이루어진다. 낭만주의자들의 예술적 완성도와 예술 자체가 지니는 원리상의 한계가 그것이다. 헤겔은 ``반어``의 ``자의성``을 들어 낭만주의자들의 예술을 혹평한다. 헤겔은 낭만적 반어가 그 자의성으로 인해 진지함의 결여, 공허성 및 공허를 채우기 위한 동경, 자기 파괴에 그친다고 본다. 나아가 절대이념을 표현하는 세 가지 형식, 즉 예술·종교·철학 가운데 근대정신이 지니는 무한성은 철학을 통해서야 제대로 드러날 수 있다고 본다. 그에 의하면, 근대에 들어서면서 예술은 더 이상 무한한 정신을 드러내기에 적합한 형식이 아니다.

Generally speaking, art is the activity that makes human mind-thinking or idea-sensible. The modern human mind transcends nature. The characteristics of modern mind is ``infinity`` and ``freedom``. Here breaks out the dilemma of modern art: How can a work of art represent the infinity? Fr. Schlegel finds his way to "Irony". He thinks it ``selfcreation, self-destruction, self-limiting``. It works ``endless Negation``. Through the Negation, he hopes, the gap between the infiniteness (of thinking) and the finiteness (of art) constantly narrows. But Hegel views the matter differently. He criticizes Schlegel`s Irony seriously. His criticism is doing in two ways. On the one hand, he hypercriticizes the works of the Ironists. They ignore the artistic maturity, he thinks, because of the ``arbitrariness`` of Irony. The arbitrariness makes their works unworthy. Due to their arbitrariness, they are characterized by lack of seriousness, the emptiness and a yearning for to fill it, self-destruction. On the other, in his times, he asserts, art is no longer valid to express the mind of the times(Zeitgeist) properly. This essay attemps to compare Fr. Schlegel`s understanding of Irony to Hegel`s. With this comparison, I expect to show values and limitations that Irony has.
