본 연구는 신문의 사설과 칼럼에 나타난 고전 인용의 수사적 방식을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 인용의 방식을 결정하는 것은 전적으로 필자 고유의 선택에 달려있지만 사설이나 칼럼에 인용된 고전은 설득과 수용을 목적으로 삼는 수사학의 특징을 보인다. 수사학의 가장 중요한 기능이 상대방을 설득하는데 있는 것이라면 고전 인용이야말로 상대를 설득할 수 있는 가장 효율적인 수사방식 중의 하나라고 할 수 있다. 고전 인용의 일차적 목적은 자신의 견해를 정당화하고 독자의 판단을 자신의 논증 의도대로 유도하는 데 있다. 고전을 인용하는 이러한 논증 양식은 권위있는 학자의 업적을 활용하여 상대를 설득하는 이른바 ‘권위 논증’을 바탕으로 한다. 전문가의 의견에 의존해서 자신의 주장이나 논리의 설득력을 확보하는 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 고전 인용은 독자의 관심을 촉구하는 데 중요한 수사학적 기능을 갖는다. 교양 지식 혹은 정보의 전달 차원에서 고전의 내용을 친절하게 풀어 제공하는 것은 물론이고 화려한 장식으로 독자의 관심을 이끈다. 고전의 대표적인 문구로 효과적인 주의끌기를 하는가 하면 중복된 과잉 인용으로 현학성을 과시하기도 한다. 이러한 고전 인용은 독자들의 내면에 있는 호기심이나 지적 욕구를 자극하여 독자의 관심을 이끌어 내는 설득력을 가지고 있다. 독자를 설득하기 위해 수사학의 기능을 잘 활용한 사설이나 칼럼의 고전 인용 방식은 차후 고전 읽기와 글쓰기의 교육적인 의미로 활용할 필요가 있다. 전문 필자들이 고전을 인용하는 수사 방식을 면밀히 관찰해 보면 고전읽기가 글쓰기에 어떻게 구체적으로 개입되는지 교육적 시범 대상을 찾을 수 있기 때문이다. 고전 인용은 고전 읽기를 적극적으로 독려할 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 학문의 발전과 확장에 기여할 수 있는 창의적 글쓰기로서의 인용 교육에도 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

The aim of this study is to observe how quotations from the classics are rhetorically applied in newspaper editorials and columns. Each editorialist or columnist may cite the classics in their unique ways, but the object they achieve from their various citing techniques is all the same nevertheless: persuasion. Therefore, quoting the classics in critical writing can be practiced as a very efficient rhetorical device to persuade the audience. The primary purpose of quoting the classics is to borrow the voice of an expert. This is a form of what is called the appeal to authority. With this help, authors can justify their argument, which convinces his or her audience to change their mind eventually. Another purpose of quoting the classics is to develop a bond of sympathy between an author and his/her readers. Any stories and anecdotes linked to the quoted classics deliver common knowledge as well as information to the readers. Quotations from the classics also play a decorative and rhetorical function. An author can reiterate his/her argument but avoid his/her redundancy by elegantly employing quotations from the classics. By employing appropriate quotations, an author arouses his/her readers` curiosity and at the same time satisfies their intellectual desire. In search of a critical reading and writing model, I intend to make a close investigation on the rhetorical usage of quotations from the classics in newspaper editorials and columns. This will prove the importance of reading the classics for our improving persuasive writings and furthermore a suitable educational method for creating writing.
