지금 우리 사회는 신자유주의와 세계화의 전 지구적인 흐름 속에서 파행적인 교육 현실에 직면해 있다. 특히 교육 문화 속에 깊게 침투해 있는 수치 문화는 청소년 자살이나 학교폭력과 같은 학생들의 폭력적인 생존이라는 아픈 결과를 초래하였다. 이 연구는 이러한 맥락에서 한국 교육의 수치 문화와 그 속에 잠재된 폭력성의 연관성을 성찰하고자 하였다. 연구결과, 수치심과 폭력 행위는 역사적으로 봤을 때 교육현장에서 뿐만 아니라 사회 제반 영역에 있어서 상호 밀접한 관계에 있으며, 이는 근본적으로 그 사회(교육현장)에 수치 문화를 조장하는 각종 사회(교육)정책에 기인함을 알 수 있었다. 이 연구에서는 교육현장에서 이를 극복하기 위하여 비폭력 교육인의 필요성을 제안하였다. 비폭력 교육인은 한 마디로 공감 교육을 생산해낼 수 있는 사람이며, 공감 교육은 인간과 자연(세계)에 대한 감지(感知)의 지평을 넓혀 나가는 행위를 집단(공동체)적으로 실천하는 교육이다. 그리고 이러한 교육을 실천해 나갈 수 있는 비폭력 교육인은 기존의 권위주의적인 교육 문화 풍토를 지양하고 교육을 통한 평등주의적 인격을 양성함으로 가능할 것이다. 비폭력 교육인과 함께 실천되는 공감 교육이 이루어진다면 지금 우리나라 교육이 처해 있는 수치 문화와 그 속에 잠재된 폭력성의 고리를 풀어나갈 수 있고 또 끊을 수 있을 것이다.

Our society is suffering from the breakdown of education in the stream of globalization. The shame culture deeply embedded in our society leads to an increasing number of cases reported of violence and suicide in schools. The purpose of the study is to reveal the association between the shame culture and violence. It is found out that the sense of shame and violence are closely related not only in the school environment but also in other realms of society, which is resulted from the culture of shame encouraged in the current education policies. Educators with non-violence principle are needed to solve this problem. Educators with non-violence principle are those who are capable of empathic education whose purpose is to broaden the perception of man and nature. The empathic education, in turn, could be a step towards breaking the vicious circle of the shame culture and violence in the education environment.
