본 연구는 개방적 혁신(open innovation) 관점에서 기업이 다양한 외부협력 대상들과 협업하고, 외부로 기술이 유출되는 것을 보호하며, 기업의 창의성을 높이는 것이 혁신성과에 어떤 영향을 주는지에 대해 경영자의 역할을 중심으로 그 시사점을 도출하는데 목적이 있다．3,400개의 국내 중소기업을 대상으로 한 "2여1년 중소기업 기술통계조사” 자료를 분 석한 결과, 외부 협력 대상들이 다양하고, 기술 보호 정도가 높을수록, 혁신에 의한 성과가 높게 나타났다. 또한 외부 협력의 다양성은 신기술의 창의적 속성 (신규성, 유용성)을 증대 시키는 효과를 보였으나, 적절한 신규성은 혁신 성과 증대에 효과적인 반면, 과도한 신규 성은 오히려 혁신 성과를 저해하는 결과를 나타냈다. 따라서 성공적인 기술개발과 상용화를 위해 경영자들이 다양한 외부협력 및 기술보호 전략, 또한 조직 창의성 관리 증대에 대 한 관심을 갖고 그 중요성을 인지할 필요가 있음을 시사하고 있다．

From an ``Open Innovation`` point of view, this paper examines the role of partner diversity technology protection, and creativity on technological innovation performance, and endeavors to provide practical insights to the managers. Based on a multi-regression analysis of 3, 400 small and medium-sized firms in Korea, we found that high degree of partner diversity. and technology protection are positively associated with firm performance. High degree of partner diversity is also positively associated with the attributes of new technologies`` creativity(novelty, usefulness). However, we also found that a moderate level of novelty is positively associated with firm performance whereas excessive novelty hampers firm performance. We call attention to the managers on the issues such as open innovation strategy, knowledge protection, and the management of creativity for technology development as well as successful commercialization of the innovation.
