우리는 최근에 국민국가의 경계를 가로지르는 정보, 사람, 재화, 서비스의 이동과 흐름의 급격한 증가를 경험하였다. 비록 초국가주의는 용어, 범위, 방법에서 문제점을 갖고 있으나, 초국가적 이주 연구는 일상생활에서 국경을 가로지르는 활동에 대한 새로운 패러다임으로 정착하고 잇다. 이 연구의 목적은 초국가적 이주 연구의 발전과 한계를 이해하고, 미래연구 방향을 제시하기 위한 것이다. 초국가주의는 새로운 현상이 아니라 초국가적 렌즈로서 국경을 가로지르는 활동에 대한 새로운 관점을 재현하는 것이다. 초국가적의 출현은 세계화 담론, 이주자의 주변화, 그리고 국민국가의 정체성 강화의 맥락에서 이해될 수 있다.. 초국가적 사회공간은 민족 기반의 사회자본, 민족과 문화 공동체에 대한 소속감, 로컬의 일상생활로의 착근에 의해 작동되고, 유지되고, 변화한다. 초국가적 이주 연구는 초국가적 사회형성, 초국가적 정체성, 초국가적 문화 재생산, 초국가주의와 개발, 초국가적 이주자 정치, 초지역주의와 같은 분야를 중심으로 연구되고 있다. 그러나 초국가주의 접근은 약간의 문재를 초함하고 있는데, 로컬리티, 고착성, 글로벌 권력관계의 역할과 영향을 간과하는 경향이 있다. 그리고 초국가적 사회적 유대와 네트워크를 지속적으로 연결하는 이주자는 많지 않다는 것을 간과하고 있다. 이와 함께, 초국가주의는 방법론적 국가주의와 관련된 문제점을 갖고 있다. 본 연구에서는 초국가적 연구에 대한 새로운 사고를 제안하였다. 초국가주의는 이주자의 로컬리티와 이동성을 동시적으로 고려하면서 국민국가, 초국가적 정체성 그리고 소속감에 대한 인식론적적 제고가 필요하다. 방법론적 국가주의의 문제를 해결하기 위해서 본 연구는 장소 렌즈의 접근을 통해 이주자의 장소 점유와 장소만들기, 이주자 배제에 대한 사회적 담론, 그리고 정착사회의 로컬변화를 살피는 것이 필요함을 제안한다.

We have recently experienced the rapid increase of movement and flow of information, people, goods and services which transcend the boundaries of nation-states. Even though transnationalism has some problems for terms, scope and method, the study of transnational migration is now recognized as a new paradigm for border- crossing activity in everyday lives. The purpose of this study is to understand the development and limitation of transnational migrant studies and to suggest future research agendas. Transnationalism is not new phenomenon, instead it is the representation of a new perspective on border-crossing activity trough transnational lenses. The emergence of transnationalism can be understood as the contexts by the discourse of globalization of migrants, and reinforcement of identity by nation-states. Transnational social space is formed, matintained and changed by ethnic based social capital, belonging to ethnic and cultural community, and embeddedness into local everyday lives. Transnational migrant studies have inclined to focus several research interests such as transnational social formation, transnational identity, transnational cultural reproduction, transnationalism and development, transnational migrant politic, and translocalities. However, this transnational approach has some problems, transnationalism has neglected on the role and influence of locality, fixity and global power relations. And only some migrants are continually connected into transnational social ties networks. IN relation to this, transnational migrant study has some problems related to methodological nationalism. This research attempts to suggest some new ways of thinking about transnational migrant research. It needs epistemological rethinking such as the roles of nation-states, transnational identity and belonging, focusing, focusing simultaneously on the connection of locality and mobility. To overcome the problems of methodological nationalism, this research suggests that transnatonal migrant study might be better to introduce the lense of place to understand the processes of migrants` place making, the exclusion of migrants by social discourse, and local changes in destination societies.
