우리나라에서는 도농간 상호보완을 도모하기 위하여 1995년부터 도시지역과 농촌지역을 하나의 행정구역으로 통합도한 도농통합시가 설치되었다. 본 연구에서는 인구규모의 변화를 통해 도농통합시의 차별적 성장을 고찰하였다.도농통합시는 각 도시의 입지장소에 따라 성장 또는 침체가 뚜렷하게 구분되면서 도시간에 차별성장을 보여주었다.서울이나 부산과 같은 대도시권에서는 도시인구의 성정아 현저하였지만, 대도시로부터 멀리 떨어진 도시에서는 침체현상이 발생하였다. 도시내에서는 성장하는 도시지역과 침체되는 농촌지역으로 나뉘는 도시내 차별성장 패턴도 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 도시전체의 인구변화에 도시지역의 인구변화가 미치는 영향력은 지속적으로 증가하였다.도농통합시의 인구변화패턴에 내재하고 있는 속성이 인구밀도, 시가지 밀도, 도시지역의 인구비중 등 도시적 요소가 지배적으로 나타난 것에서 보는 바와 같이, 우리나라 대부분의 도농통합시에서는 도시지역으로의 쏠림현상이 심화되었다. 즉 도시전체의 인구증감과 무관하게 도시지역과 농촌지역간의 격차는 심화되고 있다.

Since 1995, the urban-rural consolidated city integrated urban and rural region into the same administrative district has been installed to promote a balance through complementary between urban and rural area. This paper analysed the differential growth of urban-rural consolidated cities through the changes of population size. Discrimination of inter-city growth or recession appeared depending on the location of the cities. In the cities located in metropolitan areas such as Seoul or Busan, the increases of population were significant, but the cities located far away form metropolitan areas showed population decrease. And discrimination growth of intra-city between urban and rural region, Was confirmed, The impact of population change of urban region to whole-city population change has increased continuously.
