In this paper I track down some layers of violence embodied in Saturday. What is under scrutiny is Baxter, the vengeful thug in London street. Then I move to discuss how McEwan criticizes the biological determinism which reinforces the division between the classes, races and cultures in the multi-cultural era in London. In many ways, Saturday is a fictional response to global violence such as 9/11 New York terror and Iraq war. McEwan`s primary concern centres around how to contain violence and dissolve discrimination. By doing so, he hopes to establish a peaceful world. This leaves us to meditate on how to confront “the Other”. In conclusion, I argue that Ian McEwan is a very ethical writer in the sense that he takes the views that the politics of exclusion and discrimination of “the Other” is not humane. By addressing the need to have a sympathetic capacity towards “the Other”, he wants to let us speculate a better world. The application of some key terms and views taken from Zizek to an analysis of McEwan`s novels is particularly viable and rewarding. (Chungnam University)
