This paper is to examine the reason for writing “Hapworth 16, 1924” with the epistolary by Salinger. In the work main character Seymour Glass didn`t do well with unspiritual people and withdraw from the everyday reality of the Camp in 1924, since he has super soul as a genius. To reveal his thoughts to us Salinger needed a logic, and he wrote “Hapworth” using the long epistolary. The preface in “Hapworth” suggests the possibility which Buddy copied it as short tale, though its originality was written by Seymour. It contains more negative information of Seymour`s personality than other Salinger`s works, because Buddy did not want to write on negative view of Seymour`s personality depicted by Seymour`s point of view. Accordingly we can know it becomes the confession of Salinger`s Oriental religion written by the epistolary, though “Harpworth”, Seymour`s long letter, is private and immediate about his life in the Camp.
