It is in the tradition of Thoreau`s Orientalism scholarship that though the mode of Thoreau`s philosophical life in Walden Pond parallels closely to that of the Confucian Ch?n Tzu, advocated by Confucius in the Four Books, some scholars have long diminished or slighted the importance of the Chinese influence on Thoreau. To prove Confucian-oriented Thoreau`s life on Walden Pond, I will try to delineate the core of Confucian thought, the cultivation of the self, that Thoreau relied on in Walden. In Walden, Thoreau used the same image of the Confucian Chun Tzu(Gentleman) which he cherished and endeavored to follow throughout his life. He not only visualized for himself the characteristic of the ideal Chun Tzu- humanity, wisdom and devotion-but also tried to influence the masses in achieving such an ideal. This exemplary figure, Thoreau believed, could lead the unenlightened universe to an awakening of inward life through spiritual regeneration. By analyzing the Confucian quotations Thoreau used in Walden, we can understand how the Confucian concept of the Chun Tzu was interwoven into the main threads of Walden. (Dankook University)
