본고는 한국의 교실 공간에 적합한 비판적 언어인식(CLA) 교육 방법을 개발하여, 교사들로 하여금 학생들의 비판적 언어인식 능력을 신장하도록 하는 데 있다. 비판적 담화 분석은 Fairclough에서 처음 도입되었는데, 그는 담화를 분석하기 위해 3가지 층위를 설정하였다. 즉 구어나 문어로 된 언어 텍스트 분석 층위, 텍스트 생산과 분배, 소비를 다루는 담화 실천 층위, 논증적 사건을 다루는 사회문화적 실천 층위이다. CDA의 핵심 역할은 사회적힘(권력)과 언어(담화) 지배의 관계와 그 기능을 밝히는 데 있다. CDA는 담화를 권력 관계에 의해 형성된 것으로 보지만, 기존의 언어인식은 단지 사회문화적 맥락과 무관한 언어만을 연구해 왔다. 이런 이유로 말미암아 CLA는 CDA를 교육적 맥락에까지 확장해서 적용하고자 하였다. 이러한 내용을 교실 수업 담화에 적용하여 교사로 하여금 CLA에 대한 내용을 쉽게 이해하도록 소개하였다. 비판적 언어인식 활동의 방향을 정립하기 위해 의미 중심, 실제 사회적 환경 중심, 발달적인 관점, 학생 중심, 성찰을 수반한 언어활동을 제시하였다. 그리고 Fairclough가 제시한 CLA의 4단계를 신문 기사에 나타난 ``자유 간접 화법``에 적용해 보았다. 각 단계마다 학생들이 중심이 되어 할수 있는 언어인식 활동 자료를 소개하고 나서, 수업 시간에 이를 효과적으로 지도할 수 있도록 교사들의 설명 자료를 곁들였다.

The purpose of this articles is to develop of educational method of critical language awareness(CLA) and then to provide it to teachers who endeavour to improve student`s CLA. First, I studied perspective of language of Fairclough who had introduced critical discourse analysis(CDA) theory. He divided the three-dimensional framework for examining discourse, which comprised of analysis of language texts, discourse practice(process of text production, distribution and consumption), and discourse events as instances of sociocultural practice. In CLA the focus is on the ways in which language represents the world and social construction. CLA exemplifies CDA in teaching contexts whilst strengthening essential principles of language awareness. I applied this frame of CLA and CDA to classroom discourse and reinterpreted them to teachers who have difficulties to understand them. Finally I developed new case study which can be apply to classroom, which was based on Fairclough`s CLA instruction into four stages: Reflection, Systemizing, Explanation, and Developing practice. It is teaching direct and reported speech from a CAL perspective.
