조선시대의 고전 논변은 당대에 살아있는 장르로서 실용적으로나 교육적으로 매우 중요한 역할을 하였다. 그러나 근대에 접어들면서 이루어진 정전의 전환 이후 고전 논변은 실용적으로뿐 아니라 교육적으로도 죽은 장르가 되었다. 우리나라의 근대 정전 전환은 서구 열강의 침략을 동반한 서구 문명의 급격한 도래와 이에 대한 대응으로서의 자기부정과 수용을 통해 매우 급박하게 이루어졌으며, 그 결과 해방 이후의 정전은 민족 문학을 중심으로 재편되었다. 우리나라의 근대적 정전 전환은 점진적·성찰적·계승적으로 이루어진 것이 아니라 급진적·배제적·단절적으로 이루어진 것이었으며, 민족주의 적이고, 반중세적이며, 서구지향적이라는 특징이 있다. 이러한 정전 전환 과정에서 조선시대에 정전으로서의 확고한 지위를 차지하고 있던 고전 논변은 정전의 지위를 잃었으며 우리의 고전 교육에서 전통적인 논변 문화는 빈자리로 남게 되었다. 고전 논변의 빈자리 현상이 개선되기 위해서는 우리의 정전 전환의 과정에 대한 성찰과 함께 그것이 현재의 교육에서 지니는 의의와 가능성이 입증되어야 한다. 고전 논변이 현대에도 지니고 있는 교육적 가치는 문화적 텍스트로서의 가치이며 그 교육적 가치를 실현하는 접근 방법은 문화 읽기로 서의 고전 교육이다.

This research aims to reveal the educational value of Korean classic argumentation in light of classic education. The classic argumentation in Joseon dynasty had been a communicative genre which had important function practically and educationally. But afterward from the modern times, the classic argumentation genre was dead in both practical and educational meaning. This phenomenon is worth inquiring from the viewpoint of canon shift. In the modern times of Korean history, the medieval canon had been shifted to modern canon very abruptly. In the process, the educational value of Korean classic argumentation has been denied without serious deliberation. This research inquires the process of the classic argumentation genre`s losing its status of canon and proves the incompleteness of modern canon shift. This research also discusses the meaning and potentialities of the classic argumentation. It has the value of cultural text in which students can read cultures as part of the cultural education.
