본고는 시선추적장치(Eye - tracker)를 이용한 읽기 과정에 관한 다양한 연구들을 검토하고 국어교육 분야에서 가능한 연구 주제를 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 시선추적장치를 활용하여 진행된 읽기(독서)에 관한 연구 및 시선추적장치의 발달 과정을 사적(史的)으로 고찰하고, 국어교육에서 수행할 수 있는 연구 분야와 그 가능성을 타진해 보고자 하였다. 시선추적장치(Eye - tracker)는 눈동자의 움직임 및 동공의 크기 등을 측정하는 기계로, 개인이 과제를 수행하는 동안 나타나는 시각 행동 및 인간의 주의와 관련한 연구에서 활발하게 사용되고 있다. 시선추적장치를 활용하고 있는 학문 분야는 주로 의학, 광고 디자인, 인지심리학, 언어교육과 관련되는데, 상대적으로 언어교육 관련 논문은 이제 본격적인 연구의 시작 단계라고 할 수 있다. 국어교육 연구에 시선추적장치를 도입하면, 언어 이해 과정의 연구를 기반으로 (1) 읽기 능력 발달 양상 연구, (2) 텍스트 복잡도(text complexity)연구, (3) 교과서 및 디지털 교과서 개발 연구, (4) 독서의 정의적 영역 연구, (5) 듣기 이해 과정 및 작문 과정 연구와의 연계 등을 중점적으로 다룰 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 이러한 연구들이 구체적으로 수행된다면 (한)국어 읽기(독서)의 인지적·정의적 과정을 밝히는 데 큰 시사점을 얻게 될 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to review the researches on reading process using eye tracker and to find out the research areas regarding Korean education using eye tracker. The eye tracker is an equipment for measuring the size of the pupils and eye movement. It was mostly used in study of Cognitive psychology, Advertisement, Design, Medicine and Language eduction, and conducting the studies of Language education using it is relatively in the beginning stage. It was propose five areas of study using Eye-tracker in Korean education: (1) An empirical study of reading ability development is available. (2) Text complexity study will be expanded. (3) A diversity of reference can be reflected when textbook or digital textbook is developed (4) Affective domain of reading process can be investigated. (5) Listening and writing process is covered with reading comprehension process generally.
