이 글은 1930년대 미디어에 대한 연구, 혹은 검열 연구에서 사용하는 ``독법``에 대한 문제제기이다. 우리는 문자(文字)에 집착하고, 활자화된 텍스트(문학과 논설)에 초점을 둔 ``읽기방식``에 길들어 있다. 그런데 이 관습화된 독법으로는 1930년대 이후의 매체들의 본질에 육박하기 어렵다. 또한 그것이 1930년대 미디어의 ``텍스트성``을 되살리는 방법도 아니다. 왜냐하면 1930년대 매체들은 검열의 강화와 고도화 때문에 ``발화[문자화]``에 근본적인 제약을 받았기 때문이다. 따라서 생존을 위해 ``위장``과 ``은폐`` 혹은 ``침묵``을 자기화한 1930년대 매체들을 해석하기 위해서는 새로운 접근법, 혹은 독서방식이 필요하다. 필자는 그 대안으로 ``비문자 표상(非文字 表象)``에 주목해 보았다. 비문자 표상이란 목차, 표지, 화보, 광고, 사고, 공고 따위로 지금껏 우리의 관습화된 독법에 걸리지 않았던 대상들이다. 따라서 이들이 왜 1930년대 매체 연구와 검열 연구에 중요한지를 실증하는 것이 논의의 초점이 되었다. 문 학 쪽에서 볼 때, 이 테마들이 모두 ``미지의 영역``이고 하나같이 크고 다층적인 존재들이다. 그런 점에서 이 글은 실험적인 출발이다.

This paper raise the issue of the way of reading in studies of media and the censorship in the 1930`s. We are fixated on letters, and accustomed to way of reading focusing on written text(literature and editorial) But that reading grown to habit can not close in upon the essence of medium after the 1930`s. And that is not the way of reviving the ``textuality`` of medium in the 1930`s. Because medium in the 1930`s were limiting discourse(literation) on account of reinforcement and acceleration of the censorship. Therefore we need a new approach or way of reading for interpreting that medium in the 1930`s which internalize camouflage, concealment, and silence for survival. I take note of nontextual representaions as an alternative. Nontextual representaions such as table of contents, cover, pictorial, and advertisement, are the subject on which reading grown to habit missed out until now. Therefore this study is focusing on demonstration of the importance of that nontextual representaions in the study of medium and censorship in the 1930`s. On the side of literary study, these subjects are ``uncharted territory`` and multiple existences. So this paper is an experimental departure.
