『처녀지』는 해방 이전 이기영의 마지막 장편소설이자 만주를 무대로 하고 있다는 점에서 중요한 작품임에도 불구하고 자료 접근의 제한성 때문에 그 동안 충분히 논의되지 못했다. 그 동안의 연구는 식민지 주체에 의한 제국주의 이데올로기의 전유와 제국적 주 체성의 문제, 혹은 우생학적 담론의 동원 등에 집중되어 왔는데, 텍스트의 표층에 드러난 협력의 수사들이 텍스트의 핵심 서사와 어떤 방식으로 관련을 맺는지를 충분히 설명하지 못한 것으로 보인다. 이 작품에서 가장 핵심적인 서사는 삼각관계의 애정갈등과 더불어 ``처녀지``를 개척하기 위해 나선 한 계몽적 지식인의 좌절이라는 두 축으로 이루어져 있다. 특히 한 사람의 농민이 되고자 북만(北滿) 농촌을 찾아간 지식인 주인공이 최초의 계획을 포기하고 자신의 전공으로 돌아와 ``의학 연구``로 방향전환을 하고 그 연구의 과정에서 페스트에 감염되어 죽어간다는 핵심 서사를 당대의 역사적 문맥과 결부시켜 바라볼 필요가 있다. 본 논문은 남표가 정안둔에 정착하게 되는 과정을 식민지 개척의학의 전개 과정이라는 관점에서 바라보고, 주인공이 죽음에 이르는 과정이 일본의 제국 의료의 한 극단이라고 할 수 있는 세 균전 부대에 의한 페스트 실험이라는 역사적 사실을 모티프로 했을 가능성이 있음을 밝혔다. 만주의 조선인 개척촌에서 농사 개량과 위생 보급을 통해 ``제2대의 선구자``로서의 ``문화적 사명``을 다하기 위해 금욕적이고 노동지향적인 삶을 지향했던 주인공 남표는 자신이 믿어 의심치 않았던 개척의학의 실천과정에서 페스트에 감염되어 희생된 것이다. 일본에 의한 동아시아 식민지 지배 과정에서 가장 중요한 역할을 했다고 평가되는 개척의학이 한 식민지 지식인의 육체를 잠식하는 과정을 그림으로써 이 작품은 ``위생의 근대``에 대한 근본적인 질문을 제기하고 있다.
Yi Ki-yong李箕永(1895-1984)`s Virgin Soil 處女地(1944), the last novel of Yi in the Japanese colonial rule, mainly deals with the love triangle between the protagonist and two women, and with the death of the protagonist, who wants to be a farmer in North Manchuria but has to return to his medical studies because of the love triangle. I examine the novel`s main narrative-advancements in colonial medicine in Manchuria through the influence of Japanese imperialism-to show that some of the motives in the novel are concerned with the medical experiments of the Japanese Imperial Army`s biological warfare laboratory, Unit 731. The protagonist, who lives a labor oriented and abstemious life, in attempting to accomplish his mission of educating Korean farmers in North Manchuria about agricultural improvements and the importance of hygiene, falls victim to development medicine-Japanese colonial medicine in Manchuria, which he believes to be of benefit. By depicting the death of a colonial-era intellectual as being caused by development medicine, which played a significant role in Japanese colonialism, the novel highlights fundamental issues with regard to the concept of “hygienic modernity” in East Asia.
