작문 연구의 최근 동향을 종합적인 시각에서 조망하기 위해 본고에서는 먼저 작문 연구의 뿌리가 되는 수사학의 전통을 각 시대별 특성을 중심으로 간단히 정리해 보았다. 이러한 수사학적 전통에서 파생된 현대의 작문 이론을, 형식주의 작문 이론, 구성주의 작문 이론, 사회구성주의 작문 이론 등으로 구분하여 각 이론의 특징을 요약해 보았다. 그리고 의미 구성 현상에 대한 새로운 설명 방식을 재생산, 대화, 협상의 관점에서 검토해 보았다. 또한, 텍스트 생산 활동으로서의 작문에 대한 연구 동향을 표면적 구조 중심 연구와 내적 구조 중심 연구로 구분하여 정리해 보았다. 그리고 의미 구성 현상에 대한 새로운 설명 방식과 텍스트 생산 활동으로서의 작문에 대한 연구 동향을 정리해 보았다. 끝으로 이와 같은 연구 동향에서 얻은 통찰을 바탕으로 하여 앞으로 우리가 추진해야 할 작문 연구의 주요 과제를 소략하게나마 제시해 보았다.

The past half century have brought about dramatic changes in writing research. Until the 1970s, most studies of writing were concerned with one of another aspect of the written product. Durung the 1970, the focus on product was replaced with a new concern for the writing process. Durung the 1980s, a third strand of writing research has been added：a concern with context-with approaches that look carefully at homes, classroom, and workplaces as critical social contexts in which people learn to write in interaction with their peers and teachers. The current popular concern over writing has generated a number of theories concerning its nature and its consequences on both the individual and society. The consequences of writing on society are well attested and quite profound, as writing is a socially motivated phenomenon；its purposes, uses, and values are determined by the society in which such writing skills are practised. Writing is not a universally uniform set of skills, but rather a set of highly contextualized skills, determined by the society in which it functions.
