본고는 구체적인 의사소통 상황에서 표현자가 상하위어 중 상위어나 하위어를 선택하는 인지적 처리 기제가 무엇인지를 밝히고, 그 표현의 효과를 고찰한 논문이다. 본고에서는 특히 상하위어가 갖는 기본적 특성에 주목하여 인지적 처리 기제와 표현의 효과를 살펴보았다. 구체적인 의사소통 상황에서 상하위어 중 상위어나 하위어를 선택하는 과정은 ‘표현 층위’와 ‘표현 방향’이라는 두 가지 측면을 고려하여 표현자의 의도를 실현하는 과정이다. 상위어를 선택할수록 개념의 추상성이 높아진다. 상하위어 선택에 따른 표현의 효과는 표현 층위와 표현 방향으로 나누어 기술하였다. 표현 층위 선택과 관련하여서는, 상위어를 선택하면 범주의 공통적 특성이 강조되고 하위어를 선택하면 범주 구성원의 변별적 특성이 강조됨을 논하였다. 표현 방향 선택과 관련해서는, 특정 범주 선택의 의도가 부각됨으로써 표현자의 관점이나 태도가 표명된다는 점과 타범주와의 비교에 의해 대조 효과가 유발됨을 기술하였다.

This paper describes a expresser`s cognitive data-processing mechanism which deals with hyponymy in communication. And this describes a expressive`s effect caused by hyponymy`s usage. While describing, this paper specially focus on a hyponymy`s peculiarity. A expresser`s vocabulary selective mechanism in communication is related to ``expressive level`` and ``expressive direction``. Hyperonym`s selection raise the abstraction. The other side, hyponym`s selection raise the concreteness. A expressive`s effect caused by hyponymy`s usage can be described in ``expressive level`` and ``expressive direction``. The former have the effect of emphasizing the characteristic of category(a common feature or a point of difference). The latter have the effect emphasizing comparison hyperonym with hyponym and a expressive`s viewpoint.
