본 연구는 쓰기와 말하기 차원에서 이루어지는 자기소개 활동의 성격을 살피고, 메시지 전달방법으로서의 스토리텔링이 자기소개에 활용되는 과정에서 나타나는 효과에 대하여 살펴보고자 하였다. 자기소개 텍스트는 텍스트 내용 자체만이 아니라 텍스트 생산자를 관찰하기 위한 텍스트로서, 소개하는 태도나 방식은 텍스트 생산 목적에 상당히 중요하다. 자기소개는 문제해결적 과정으로, 표면적으로는 소개 내용의 설명이 중요한 것 같지만 텍스트의 기능상 설득의 성격을 강하게 가진다. 그러므로 목표하는 바에 충실한 텍스트 생산 활동을 위해서는 내용에 대한 이해도를 높이고 설득력을 갖추는 것이 관건이 된다.이를 위해 텍스트 생산자는 스토리텔링 방식을 적극 활용할 필요가 있다. 이야기(story) 생산 차원에서는, 자신의 특징을 명확히 드러낼 수 있는 사실을 소개하거나 경험적 사실에 대한 의미부여 과정에서 경험을 가치 있게 만들거나, 사건과 사건을 의미 있는 관계로 연결하여 ‘나’의 특징을 부각할 수 가 있다. 말하기(telling) 차원에서는 메시지 전달과 관련한 수사적 상황에 따라 청자를 고려하여야 한다. 대명사, 높임법, 어미 등에 있어서 감성소구형을 사용하여 친숙도를 높인다. 이러한 과정에서 텍스트 수신자는 내용에 대한 이해도와 수용도가 높아지고 내용에 대한 각인 효과가 향상하게 된다. 스토리텔링의 장점을 활용한 연구가 수많은 영역에서 진행된 지가 오래 되었음에도 문제해결적 글쓰기 차원에서 논의된 바는 없다는 점에 본 연구의 의의를 둔다.
