이 글은 대학 신입생 대상 <글쓰기> 강좌에서 교육해야 할 ‘학술적글쓰기’의 의미와 성격을 검토하고 규정하기 위해 구성되었다. 먼저, 학술적 글쓰기 교육과 관련해 70년대 이후 미국에서 전개되어 온 이론적 쟁점과 논의 변화의 양상을 살폈다. 논의는 다음과 같이 전개되었다. : 1) ‘학술적 담화 공동체’ 및 공동체의 언어로서 ‘학술적 담화’ 개념이 부각되고, 신입생 필자가 이 언어를 습득해야 할 당위성이 주장됨(70년대 중후반~80년대 중반), 2) 단일하고 고정된 ‘학술적 담화 공동체’ 및 ‘학술적 담화’ 개념이 부정되고, 존재하는 것은 ‘학술적 담화 공동체들’과 ‘학술적 담화들’ 뿐임이 강조됨(80년대 중후반~90년대 초반), 3) 단일하고 고정된 공동체 및 담화가 존재하지 않는다는 사실을 인정한 상태에서 신입생 글쓰기 교육의 내용을 다각도로 모색함(90년대 초중반~현재). 각시기 논의는 신입생 대상 학술적 글쓰기 교육을 각기 다른 방향으로 이끌었다. 이상의 논의를 참조하여, 이 글에서는 신입생 학술적 글쓰기 교육을 위한 ‘구심적 장르(centripetal genre)’를 설정할 필요성을 밝히고 그 의미와 성격을 규정했다. 이는 상황 맥락에 따라 다양한 장르로 분화되는 학술적 글쓰기‘들’이 공유하는 공통적 문식성을 교육하기 위한 방법적 설정이다. ‘구심적 장르’로는 복수(複數) 자료 읽기-쓰기 형식의 학술적 에세이가 적합할 것으로 판단했다. 판단의 근거로는 이 에세이가 1) 다양한 학술적 글쓰기가 보편적으로 요구하는 문식성을 필자가 습득할 수 있게 하는 가장압축적 형식의 장르라는 점, 2) 중등교육에서 사용하는 장르들과 일정한 유사성과 차이를 지님으로써 필자가 이미 갖추고 있는 문식성을 토대로 새로운 문식성을 함양할 수 있는 계기를 부여한다는 점, 3) 신입생 대상 <글쓰기> 강좌의 현실적인 교육 상황에 적합하다는 점을 들었다.

The purpose of this paper is to examine and to define meanings and characteristics of academic writing genre for college freshmen. First, this paper examines theoretical issues and discussions about freshmen academic writing which have developed in U.S. since the 1970s. Periods can be divided as following. 1) Period that the concepts of ``the academic discourse community`` and ``the academic discourse`` are highlighted and necessity of educating freshmen academic discourse is emphasized(mid-to late 70s~mid 80s). 2) Period that the single and fixed concepts of ``the`` academic discourse community and ``the`` academic discourse are criticized and asserted that there only exists academic discourse``s`` and academic discourse``s``(mid-to late 80s~early 90s). 3) On the premise that there only exists academic discourse``s`` and academic discourse``s``, the new contents of freshmen academic writing education are searched for(mid 90s~the present). Refer to the above discussion, this paper proposed that the necessity of setting a ``centripetal genre`` for educating freshmen writer and defined the meaning and characteristics of it. As the centripetal genre, this paper proposed multiple sources reading-writing academic essay.
