이 논문은 대입논술고사의 도입 배경을 먼저 설명하고, 대입논술고사의 개념과 시기 구분 그리고 시행에서의 변화 과정을 살펴보았다. 본고에서 논의된 바를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대입논술고사는 학교교육과정과 유기적 관계를 맺지 못하고, 기존의 대입전형 요소가 갖는 한계에 대한 반작용으로 국가 주도로 대두되었거나 대학입시 국면에 대한 대학의 대응 차원에서 도입되었다. 둘째, 대입논술고사는 ‘글쓰기 논술’, ‘고전논술’, ‘통합논술’ 등으로 시기 구분을 할 수 있으며, 특히 고전논술은 ‘고전논술1’(1998-2005학년도)과 ‘고전논술2’(2006-2007학년도)로 구분된다. 셋째, 대입논술고사는 대학수학에 필요한 고차적인 사고능력 또는 비판적-창의적 사고능력을 측정하는 시험이며, 텍스트에 대한 분석·독해력을 바탕으로 주어진 과제를 창의적으로 해결하여 논리적으로 표현하는 능력을 측정하는 시험으로 정의할 수 있다. 넷째, 대입논술고사의 변화 추이를 보면 세 가지 경향성을 확인할 수 있다. 1998~2008(2009)학년도까지 정시모집에서 논술고사를 시행했으며, 통합논술기부터는 대입논술고사의 시행의 중심이 정시모집에서 수시모집으로 이동하고 있고, 최근 들어 학부 또는 계열로 구분하여 논술고사가 시행되고 있다. 그런데 서울대는 이와는 다르게 ‘나 홀로’ 행보를 하고 있다.

This thesis deals with the background of the introduction of essay testing for the college entrance exam in Korea. Its concept and change will also be addressed. Firstly, the essay test was introduced as a response to the existing college entrance process and as a countermeasure by universities without the test having an organic relationship with the school curriculum. Secondly, the essay test can be classified into three parts - a free essay test, an essay test on classical writing, and an essay test on interdisciplinary writing. Essays on classical writing can be divided into two periods - first (1998-2005) and second (2006-2007). Thirdly, the Essay test is an exam to test students` thinking power and critical and creative thinking power. It can be defined as an exam to test students` ability to solve a problem creatively and express their argument logically based on the analysis and understanding of the given text. Finally, looking into the development of the essay test, three tendencies were found. Essay testing was performed during the time of regular admission from 1999 to 2008(2009). Since the period of essay testing on interdisciplinary writing was introduced, more universities have been performing essay tests during occasional admission time rather than regular admission time. More recently, essay tests are being performed according to university course or department specifications. On the other hand, Seoul National University is performing its own essay test far removed from all these tendencies.
