2009년 개정 교육과정에 따른 국어과 교육과정에서 새롭게 설정된 고전 과목은, 시·공간을 넘어 인류의 보편적 가치와 지혜를 지닌 고전 읽기를 바탕으로 하여 학습자의 수준 높은 국어능력을 기르기 위해 매우 중요하다. 그러나 이러한 점이 곧 새로운 과목을 설정해야 한다는 당위로 바로 연결되는 것은 재검토가 필요하다. 따라서 이 연구에서는, 먼저 고전 과목의 새로운 설정이 얼마나 타당성을 가지고 있는지에 대하여 고전 교육과정의 성격과 목표 진술을 통해 검토해 보았다. 그리고 그에 따른 성취기준상의 문제는 없는지, 교수·학습 방법 및 고전 교과서와의 관계 맺음은 적절한지 등에 대하여 거칠게나마 논의하였다. 그 결과, 고전 교육과정이 다른 선택과목과 다른 고유하고 독자적인 영역을 확보하기 위해서는 성격과 목표, 그리고 성취 기준의 진술에 있어서 독서와 문학과는 변별되는 지점이 필요하다고 보았다. 그리고 교수·학습 방법과 교과서 문제에 있어서도, 국어과 교육의 성격에 대한 논의 및 다른 선택과목과의 관계, 그리고 현실적인 국어 수업 장면을 고려하여 개선될 필요가 있다고 보았다.

Based on reading classics, ``Classic`` subject, newly launched on the revised Korean language curriculum in 2009, is very important for learners to develop their fluence Korean language ability. However, ground that the aforementioned value of classic is the appropriateness of launch of ``Classic`` subject requires further examination. First of all, this study examines validity of the newly established subject through description of characters and the goal of the curriculum, thereby roughly discussing whether the problem for the achievement standards and correlation between the way of teaching-learning and ``Classic`` textbook are appropriate. Consequently, I find out the necessity of the distinction between ‘Reading`` and ``Literature`` in description of characters, the goal, and the achievement standards, in order for ``Classic`` curriculum to establish its own independent domains. And also it requires that discussion about character of Korean language education, the connection with other elective courses, and practical scene of Korean language course are contemplated.
