본 논문은 대학 글쓰기 교육에서 글쓰기 센터의 역할을 규명함으로써 대학생들의 글쓰기 능력 신장을 위한 효과적인 방법을 제시하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 글쓰기 센터란 문장 교정, 글쓰기 개별 상담, 글쓰기 교육 프로그램 운영 등 글쓰기 교육·연구를 담당하는 대학 기구를 말한다. 본 논문에서는 미국 대학 글쓰기 센터의 운영 실태와 모형 사례를 조사함으로써, 대학 글쓰기 교육에서 글쓰기 센터의 역할을 다음과 같이 정리하였다. 첫째, 대학 글쓰기 센터의 운영은 범교과적 글쓰기 교육을 위한 효과적인 방안이 될 수 있다. 둘째, 학생 개개인에게 구체적이고 상세한 개별 글쓰기 상담을 실시하여, 실질적인 교육의 효과를 얻을 수 있다. 셋째, 글쓰기 센터를 통해 교육 대상별로 특화된 글쓰기 교육을 시행함으로써, 학습자가 필요로 하는 실제적인 글쓰기 능력의 향상을 기대할 수 있다.

The Purpose of this essay is to suggest an effective method for developing academic writing proficiency of college writing by explaining the role of writing center in teaching of college writing. Writing centers are supposed to correct students` papers, give one-on-one tutoring, and research college writing education. This essay interrogates the actual condition and the cases of the writing centers in the U.S. colleges. The result of this research are as follows. First, college writing centers could suggest an effective way of practicing the Writing across the Curriculum. Second, college writing centers give students tutoring service in detail and a concrete way. Third, college writing centers give students tutoring service according to who they are and specifically what they need in college writing.
