The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the nature and strategies o reading to write. Reading-to-write tasks are frequently requested by the academic discourse communities. But many college students have difficulties in addressing them. So it is necessary to explicate the nature of them in order to find out the strategies of reading source texts to write. The nature of reading to write may be summarized as follows. 1. It is an act of activation and composing of schemata needed to solve the writing tasks as problems. 2. It is a process of transforming the representations of the reading comprehension which has been gained from source texts and the readers` background knowledge. 3. It is eventually a contributing activity to the growth and development of a community by way of knowledge transforming and generation of new texts. Based on the nature of reading to write, several strategies of reading source texts to write can be identified. The imitation strategy and the reading comprehension strategy may be easily adopted by many students. So some students succeed at certain writing tasks and apply their knowledge of discourse conventions in different situations. But the best one is the mining strategy as a metaphor which emphasizes on the rhetorical situation and the method of inquiry. When students mine texts in light of their goals as writers, they can begin to attend to specific features of the texts they read, selecting, organizing, and connecting ideas for the purpose of writing. In learning to mine texts, students recognize that the choices and decisions they make as writers vary according to the situation and social context in which they write. From the point of the nature of reading to write, some practical implications to the college writing instruction are suggested.
