지식 정보화 사회에서 고등학생들에게 논술 교육을 하는 것은 학생들의 고차원적 사고력을 향상시키고 적절한 의사소통의 방안을 익힌다는 차원에서 그 중요성이 매우 높다. 하지만, 현행 논술 교육은 입시 위주의 교육, 비실제적인 글쓰기, 특정 작문 이론에 치우친 교육 등으로 인해 제자리를 잡지 못하고 있다. 이로 인해 학생들은 논술문 쓰기에 점점 흥미를 점점 잃어가고, 판에 박힌 논술 교육은 오히려 논술 교육에서 얻고자 했던 고차원적 사고를 제한시키는 결과를 초래하게 되었다. 이 글은 이론적으로는 통합적 작문 교육 이론에 바탕을 두고, 방법상으로는 논술 신문을 제작하는 방안을 제시함으로써 이러한 문제점을 해소하고자 하였다. 통합적 작문 교육 이론은 쓰기의 결과물인 텍스트와 학생들의 쓰기의 과정과, 집단 구성원이나 사회 공동체간의 대화를 조화롭게 중시하는 것이다. 이러한 통합적 작문 이론을 용이하게 구체화할 수 있는 방안은 신문을 제작하는 것이다. 신문에 들어갈 원고를 작성하는 것은 그 과정과 함께 결과물을 조화롭게 중시하는 기제가 이미 마련되어 있기 때문이다. 학생 필자들은 신문에 게재될 자신의 글을 위해, 꼭 필요한 과정을 거치며 유용한 전략들을 구사하게 될 것이다. 때로는 독자 입장에서 절실히 생각해 보기 위해 동료들 간에 필요하고 충분한 대화를 나누게 될 것이다. 이러한 과정뿐 아니라, 필자를 떠난 결과물로서의 원고도 중시될 것이다. 독자 대중에게 직접적으로 읽히고 그에 따른 반응도 여간 신경 쓰이는 일이 아니기에 특히 초고쓰기를 끝내고 고쳐 쓰기를 할 때는 형식적 요소 하나하나를 면밀히 검토하게 되는 것이다. 또한 논술 신문을 제작하는 방안은 비실제적 글쓰기를 실제적인 글쓰기로 바꾸어 준다. 학교에서의 쓰기 교육은 대부분 실제 독자를 위한 글쓰기, 실제 필자들처럼 쓰는 글쓰기가 아닌, 평가받기 위한 글쓰기, 머릿속의 생각만 가지고 쓰는 비실제적인 글쓰기의 형태로 이루어져 왔다. 그러나 신문은 실제 독자들에게 읽히는 글을 쓰고, 학생 필자는 이를 위해 깊이 생각해 보는 것 외에도 자료를 조사ㆍ탐구하는 것, 사람을 만나 인터뷰 하는 것, 동료들 간에 서로 의논해 보는 것 등 실제 필자들이 거치는 글쓰기의 과정을 겪게 된다. 이로써 학생들은 글쓰기에 대한 흥미와 관심을 회복할 수 있다. 이처럼 논술 신문을 제작하는 것은 특정 작문 이론에 치우친 현행 논술 교육의 문제점을 극복하고 실제적이며 창의적인 글쓰기를 유도함으로써, 학생들로 하여금 글쓰기에 대한 흥미와 자신감, 도전 의식을 회복하게 하는 좋은 계기를 제공해 줄 수 있다.

In knowledge and information-oriented society, it is important to teach writing essay to high school students, because it can result in improving their high-level thinking ability and practicing them appropriate communication method. However, recent essay writing education does not provide students with practical, balanced, and authentic method. This problem leads students to lose their interest in writing essays and limit thinking level. This study provides the solutions for the problem based theoretically on an integrated approach in writing education and methodologically on making essay newspaper. An integrated approach in writing education focuses on the text as output of writing, the process of students` writing, and the conversation among members of the same community or society in balanced aspects. Essay Newspaper is the most feasible and effective way to actualize the integrated approach in writing education. Performing collaborative and individual work to make essay newspaper, they learn the importance of forms of the text, writing process, and interaction with others such as peers and potential readers. It enables learners to consider the each element in writing in balanced way so that they cannot just be partial to one approach of writing when they write essays. Also, essay newspaper can change students to think their writing more authentic and activate their creative thinking. Like this, making essay newspaper can provide the solution for the recent problems of writing education biased to a particular writing approach. It can also guide student`s creative essay writing and provide students with the chance to recover their interest and self-confidence in writing.
