최근 학교 현장에서 실시되는 작문 교육은 공식적이고 형식적인 글쓰기 유형으로의 “설명문쓰기”나 “논설문 쓰기”를 강조하고 있다. 그러나 이와 더불어 필자 중심의 개인적 삶의 경험 자체에 초점을 맞춘 “자기표현적(expressive) 글쓰기”의 역할도 중요하다고 보여 진다. 작문 교육 목표를 고려하여 살펴보더라도 담화 공동체에서 소통될 수 있는 글쓰기 양식을 습득하고 이를 실제 적용하여 소통적 관점에 대한 쓰기를 하는 것도 중요하지만, 쓰기 행위 혹은 표현 행위를 통해서 필자가 내적으로 성찰하고 이를 바탕으로 바람직하게 성장해 나아갈 수 있도록 도움을 주는 것도 중요한 목표라 할 수 있다. 자기 표현적 글쓰기는 후자의 작문 교육 목표를 달성하는데 주요한 역할을 도모할 수 있을 것이다. 자기 표현적 글쓰기는 학생 필자에게 첫째, 표현 행위의 기본적 습득을 돕고 둘째, 쓰기 동기 및 효능감을 신장시키며, 셋째, 학생의 긍정적 정서 발달에 기여 할 수 있으리라 본다. 이와 더불어 자기 표현적 글쓰기의 교육적 가치를 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 작문 교육과정과 실제작문 교육 간의 원활한 연계 방안 마련에 기여할 수 있다. 둘째, 학생 필자의 정의적 쓰기 요인 발달에 기여할 수 있다. 셋째, 학생 필자의 쓰기 주체로서의 성장에 기여할 수 있다. 넷째, 학생 필자의 긍정적 정서 발달에 기여할 수 있다. 이 연구의 목표는 자기 표현적 글쓰기의 개념 및 특성, 자기 표현적 쓰기의 과정에 대해 살펴보고, 자기 표현적 글쓰기의 작문 교육적 의의를 밝히는 것이다. 이런 논의는 작문 교육에서의 자기 표현적 글쓰기의 중요성에 대해 제고하고, 작문 교육의 이론 및 방법적 측면에 긍정적 기여를 할 수 있으리라 기대한다.

In the current school writing instruction, persuasive writing or expository writing is emphasized as informal and officaill writing mode. The causes are that those writing is appropriated as student writer`s writing development stage and in the school, writing instruction reflect social educational demands. But the role of expressive writing which focus on the life experience of writer`s is still important for young writers. Even if Considered the goal of writing education, it is important that the young writer acquire the writing style as communication method communicated in the discourse community. But it is also importnant that the writer introspect the self by expressive writing as writing behavior. The expressive writing is helpful for the young writer that (1) help bagic writing skill, (2) develope their writing motivation and writing efficacy and (3) encourage the students` positive emotion development. And the educational implication of expressive writing are following: (1) the expressive writing help to connect real writing instruction with national composition standard effectively, (2) to encourage the writers` affective writing factors (3) grow the young writer as writing subject and (4) develop the writiers` emotion positively.
