본고에서는 한국 대학의 글쓰기 교육과정을 설계하고 작문학 이론을 정립하는 데 도움이 되고자, 글쓰기 능력 평가에 대한 미국의 이론적 성과들과 미국의 두 대학에서 개설 중인 학부 글쓰기 교육과정을 고찰해 보았다. 컬럼비아 대학에서는 글쓰기 강사 양성 과정을 교과목으로 개설하고 있으며, 학부 글쓰기 교과목에 렌즈 에세이, 대화적 에세이, 협력 에세이, 자성적 에세이 쓰기 등의 과정을 둠으로써 신입생이 대학 담론 사회의 구성원으로 편입될 수 있도록 준비시킨다. 학습자가 납득할 만한 평가 지표를 제시한 조지타운 대학의 학부 글쓰기 수업 사례는 작문의 질과 대등하게 수행 과정의 성실도를 평가 대상으로 삼았다는 점에서 평가의 새로운 가능성을 보여주었다. 학부 글쓰기 수업에서는 평가를 통해 학습자가 대학 담론 사회에서 통용되는 감식안을 가지도록 훈련시키는 과정이 있어야 한다. ‘독자’인교수자와 ‘필자’인 학습자 간 의사소통에 장애가 발생했을 때, 교수자는 학습자가 표현하고자 하는 내용을 대학 사회의 독자에게 객관적으로 납득시키는 기술을 전수해 주어야 한다. <그림 1> 이해·표현·평가의 상호작용 모형은 학습자가 교수환경으로부터 전수받은 문식성을 바탕으로 자신의 견해를 표현하고 독자의 평가를 거쳐 다음 단계로 나아가는 발전모형을 보여주기 위해 가정되었다. 서구의 작문 개념은 부분을 합해 전체에 이를 수 있다는 발전 지향의 근대적 세계관을 담고 있는 반면, 동양에서 글쓰기는 창작 주체, 수용 객체, 객관적 환경 간의 유기적 합일과정에 기반하고 있다. 특히 한글은 음양오행의 운용 원리에 의해 창제되었으므로 더더욱 주객 합일과 독자와의 공감 여부가 한국어 작문의 성과를 좌우하는 주요 요소가 된다. 본고에서 다루지 못한 한국어 글쓰기 과정의 변별성과 고유한 평가 과정에 대한 연구는 추후의 과제로 남기고자 한다.

In order to lay the foundation of Korean composition study, this essay has introduced the result of discussions on the composition evaluation and the curriculums of university writing in America. There are a training course for writing instructors and a unique uni- versity writing curriculum in Columbia University. Students write 4 main essays in those writing progressions including lens essay, conversational essay, collaborative essay, and retrospective essay. For example, in the first ``lens essay progression``, a student should to find a lens from an article, and then he or she has to analyze the other object such as a sculpture, a picture, or another written text through the same lens of the seed text. Georgetown University presented students the acceptable evaluation indexes. They show us Korean composition teacher a new possibility to evaluate the degree of the participation and the diligence. A teacher, as a reader, has to help students, the novice writers, to get obstacles out of their written communication texts.
