본 논문에서 필자가 논의했던 것은 ‘정직하게 글쓰기’, 즉 ‘글쓰기 윤리’에 관한 것이다. 필자는 이 논문에서 진리 탐구의 전당인 대학의 글쓰기 교육에서 좋은 글을 구성하는 여러 요소들에 대한 강조와 함께 글쓰기의 윤리도 강조되어야 하며 이를 위해 글쓰기 윤리교육이 필요함을 밝혔다. 먼저 글쓰기 윤리에 어긋나는 것의 전형이라고 볼 수 있는 표절이 학부생이나 교수 및 연구자들 사이에서 어떤 이유로 얼마나 심각하게 나타나고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 또한 표절의 개념 및 대상 그리고 유형등을 살펴봄으로써 표절이 무엇인지에 대해 명확하게 이해하고, 어떻게 하면 표절을 피하고 정직하게 글을 쓸 수 있는지에 대해 올바른 인용을 중심으로 논의하였다. 왜냐하면 필자가 보기에 표절을 피하기 위한 효과적인 방법 중의 하나가 바로 인용을 정확하게 하는 것이라고 판단하기 때문이다. 표절은 일반적 지식이 아닌 타인의 창작물을 자신의 것인 것처럼 부당하게 이용하거나 자신의 기존 창작물을 다시 이용함으로써 새로운 창작물로 보이게 하는 학문적 부정행위를 말한다. 헥삼 교수는, 표절이란 자기 자신의 저작물이나 다른 사람의 저작물을 도용하여 독자를 속이려는 의도적인 노력으로서, 이것은 글쓴이가 다른 사람의 글을 4단어 이상인용 부호 없이 또는 원전에 대한 정확한 출처표시 없이 가져다가 반복하여 쓸 때 발생한다고 주장했다. 연구자는 다른 저작물을 인용할 때에는 인용된 저작물의 서지정보를 정확히 알 수 있도록 표기함으로써 이용자들이 그 출처를 파악할 수 있도록 해야 한다.

In this paper, I have discussed ``writing honestly`` or ``writing ethics``. Above all, I made my view clear that it needed emphasis the various factors composing of good writing style as well as writing ethics in university``s writing education. Firstly, in order to understand the plagiarism correctly I explored the concept, types and objects of plagiarism and how serious a problem among university students, professors and researchers. In addition, I examined a few reasons why the plagiarism happened to and some ways how to avoid it effectively. I also stressed the importance of the right citation because the citation, I thought, was one of effective ways to avoid the plagiarism. Generally speaking, the plagiarism is one of professional misconducts and means the appropriation and the presentation of another`s creative works as one`s own. It include recycling one`s own existing work to publish it as a new one and manipulating research results. According to Dr. Hexham, academic plagiarism occurs when a writer repeatedly uses more than four words from printed source without the use of quotation marks and a precise reference to the original source in a work presented as the author`s own research and scholarship. To avoid the deliberate or undeliberate attempt to plagiarize, researchers should use proper amount of quotations, which means their work should not be filled with quotations. If one uses too many quotations or does not give credit in accordance with the accepted fair practices of the relevant research community in their creative work written on the basis of their own or another`s work, this constitutes plagiarism.
