국문 글쓰기가 확립되어 가면서 근대적 구두법 역시 나타나기 시작했다. <독립신문>의 경우 일반 대중을 독자로 포섭하기 위한 장치로 띄어 쓰기를 사용하였는데 여기에는 음성문자로서의 국문에 대한 인식이 전제되어 있었다. 따라서 의미 단위와 소리 단위를 시각적 장치(space：공백)를 통해 나타내는 띄어쓰기는 읽는 이로 하여금 독서의 효율성을 높일 수있으며 이때의 ‘가상 독자’는 바로 일반 대중이었던 것이다. 다음으로 초창기 문인들은 ‘구어체’ 문장을 구현하는 데 있어 문장 부호를 사용하였다. 구어체란 서술자가 처해있는 당시 일반인들의 일상생활의 말을 그대로 기록해 낸 문장을 말한다. 즉, 문장을 기술하는 사람이 말을 행하는 사람의 입장을 취해서 그의 입장에서 사물을 인식하고, 그 인식된 사물을 그 사람의 말로 표현하는 것이다. 따라서 소설의 경우 다양한 인물이 그 인물의 말로 구현할 때 획득할 수 있는 것이다. 즉, 문장부호가 음성 언어가 지닌 어조, 음색, 속도, 고저, 억양 등을 문자 언어에서 구체화할 수 있도록 도움으로써 인물의 대사가 더욱 인물의 ‘음성’에 가깝도록 유도하는 것이다. 끝으로 이러한 일련의 변화는 독서 방식에 있어서도 ‘소리 내어 읽는’ 읽기에서 ‘눈으로 읽는’ 읽기로의 변화를 촉진시켰다. 이는 독자로 하여금 텍스트를 읽을 때 더 이상 타인이나 자신이 내는 소리에 영향을 받지 않고, 텍스트가 내는 ‘내면의 소리’에 귀를 기울이도록 하였다.

When a people reads, he need not be had influence on his voice or the other`s one and he only has to concentrate sound of text.
