이 글에서는 대학생의 글 중, 문장 점수가 높은 글(문장이 능숙한 필자의 글)과 문장 점수가 낮은 글(문장이 미숙한 필자의 글)을 비교·분석하여, 이 두 집단에서 나타나는 문장 형식의 특징과 문장 내용의 특징을 밝히고자 하였다. 문장은 필자가 자신의 생각을 쪼갠 것 중에서 가장 작은 생각 덩어리이다. 필자가 자신의 생각을 어떻게 쪼갰는가에 따라 문장의 형식과 길이가 달라진다. 먼저, 문장의 길이에서 능숙한 필자와 미숙한 필자 사이에 유의미한 차이가 없었다(p>.05) 그러나 문장 당 절의 수에서는 미숙한 필자가 능숙한 필자보다 평균 0.5개 더 많았는데, 이는 유의미한 차이였다(p<.01)이러한 두 결과는 문장이 미숙한 필자가 능숙한 필자와 같은 길이의 문장에 더 많은 절을 넣는다는 것을 의미하는데, 이는 미숙한 필자의 문장에서 절에 대한 수식어구가 적음을 의미한다. 즉, 미숙한 필자의 문장에는 세밀한 표현이 부족함을 알 수 있다. 다음으로, 글에 나타나는 문장의 분포를 절의 개수를 바탕으로 살펴보면, 문장의 능숙도와 상관없이 주로 2~3개의 절로 구성된 문장이 많은 수를 차지한다. 그러나 능숙한 필자의 글에는 거의 모든 문장이 2~4개의 절로 구성되어 있는 반면, 미숙한 필자의 글에는 절이 1~10개로 다양하게 구성되어 있는 문장이 산재해 있다. 끝으로, 문장의 내용 측면에서 문장의 오류를 살펴보면, 문장의 능숙도에 따라 오류 문장의 개수가 줄어드는 차이가 있을 뿐, 문장 오류의 내용에는 차이가 없었다. 문장 능숙도와 상관없이 대학생들이 자주 범하는 문장 오류는, 연결어미 오류, 조사 오류, 호응 오류, 형식 어투였다.

This article is intended to identify the attributes of sentences between in the college writings of skillful writers and immature writers. The attributes of sentences are determined by the way writers divide their thoughts into their sentences. First of all, there was no difference in the length of the sentences between the skillful writers and the immature writers(p>.05). However, as for the number of clauses in sentences, on the average, the immature writers used 0.5 more clauses than the skillful writers did. These results are meaningful(p<.01) because the two results show that the immature writers used less detail modifiers than the skillful writers. Next, almost every sentence constituted from 2 to 4 clauses in the skillful writer`s writings. In contrast, the immature writers` sentences constituted from 1 to 10 clauses. This indicates that the immature writers` sentences lack consistency of the number of the clauses. Finally, the number of the errors in sentences was reduced according to the degree of the sentence competence. However, interestingly, regardless of the sentence competence, four types of sentence errors were found in college students` writings. There are the misused connecting-endings, the incorrectly postpositions, and the incorrectly collocations, the formal words and phrases.
