사람은 직·간접적으로 다양한 사건·사고를 경험한다. 그런데 일상 또는 사회 생활을 하며 사건·사고에 대한 부정적 기억이 생각나는 경우가 있다. 이런 부정적 기억을 잊기 위해 치료 등 다양한 해결방법을 찾는다. 그런데 누구나 회피하고 싶은 사건·사고에 대해 책임을 갖고 해결 하는 사람은 바로 경찰공무원이다. 경찰공무원은 ‘국민의 생명·신체 및 재산의 보호’, ‘범죄의 예방·진압 및 수사’, ‘경비·요인경호 및 대간첩 작전수행’ 등의 임무를 수행하고 있다. 이와 관련 하여 경찰 공무원만의 임무 특수성이 있는데 바로 책임성·위험성·긴급성이다. 그만큼 다양한 사건·사고 경험을 하고 있고 경찰 공무원으로서 신분이 노출되어 있다. 따라서 경찰공무원은 각종 사건·사고를 경험하고, 그 결과 스트레스를 받으며 심각한 경우 PTSD 증상을 보이고 있다. 그렇다면 경찰공무원의 PTSD 증상에 대해 어떤 스트레스 대처형태가 영향을 미치는지 생각해 보아야 한다. 이 연구는 외상 사건을 경험한 경찰공무원을 대상으로 스트레스 대처형태에 따른 PTSD와의 관계를 살펴 보았다. 연구 결과 역기능 대처형태가 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 경찰공무원 개인의 스트레스 대처형태를 역기능으로 대처한다면 PTSD 증상 감소에 영향을 줄 것으로 보인다. 한편, 개인적인 PTSD 대처 이외에 법적·제도적으로 경찰공무원의 PTSD 증상에 대한 대책을 제시하였다.
Police officers perform duties such as ``protection of life, body and property of citizens``, ``prevention, suppression and investigation of crime`` and performance of counter-espionage activity`. With regards to these duties, there are characteristics unique to the work of police officers, which are responsibility, dangerousness and urgency. To this extent, police officers experience various accidents and incidents, and their identities are exposed as police officers. Nonetheless, it should be considered that police officers are human beings as well. Therefore, when they experience accidents and incidents, they are susceptible to stress and in serious cases, they show signs of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As such, it should be considered how stress coping mechanisms affect PTSD of police officers. This study examines the relationship between stress coping mechanisms and PTSD among police officers with traumatic stress experience. Results indicate dysfucntional stress coping mechanisms affect PTSD. If an individual police officer deals with stress dysfunctionally, it has impact on PTSD decrease. Meanwhile, aside from individual PTSD comping mechanisms, the study makes legal and institutional policy proposals to deal with PTSD of police officers. This study hopes to enhance welfare of police officers through the outcome of this research.
