본 논문은, 이공계 대학의 글쓰기 교육이 학부생들의 학문적 글쓰기 능력의 신장이라는 본연의 역할을 다할 수 있도록, 이공계 특성화 대학에서 실현 가능한 WAC(|Writing Across the Curriculum) 프로그램을 제시하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본 논문에서는 교양과정에 해당하는 기존의 <기초글쓰기>에 더하여 <전공글쓰기> 교육을 실시하되, 이를 위해 WAC 프로그램의 운영이 필요하다는 것을 강조하였다. 그런데 이공계 특성화 대학은 일반 대학이나 다른 전공에 비해 글쓰기 교육의 필요성에 대한 이해와 지원이 매우 부족하다. 따라서 현 상황에서 제도적, 재정적 지원이 많이 요구되는 WAC 프로그램의 범위가 다양하다는 데 주목하여, 이공계 특성화 대학에서 교수들의 자발적인 노력을 통해 시행할 수 있는 현실적인 방안을 제시하는 데 초점을 맞추었다. 즉, 학부 필수과목인 실험교과목을 글쓰기 집중 과목으로 지정한 후, 담당교수들 간의 워크숍, 실험보고서 작성법에 대한 집중강의, 튜터 양성을 위한 조교 교육, 학생 간 동료평가 활동 수행 등을 포함한 자발적인 WAC 프로그램이 그 구체적인 방안이다. 앞으로 대학 본부의 이해와 지원을 이끌어내고, WAC 운영위원회와 글쓰기센터를 육성하는 등 WAC 프로그램의 내실있는 발전을 모색하는 것을 추후 과제로 남긴다.
This paper aims to propose a realizable Writing Across the Curriculum(WAC) program for the university of science and technology enabling to develop academic writing proficiency for undergraduates in an writing education at the University of Science and Technology. For achieving this, in addition to a traditional basic writing course which belongs to general education curriculum, this paper suggests to provide writing education for major, which is required to operate WAC program. However the university of science and technology tends to be short of understanding and support of necessity for writing education compared to other general university or other major, due to its nature. Therefore it might be difficult to adopt WAC program to current situation by standard procedure itself since standard WAC program requires much of institutional and financial support. In this sense, this paper focuses on proposing feasible approach to employ it through the spontaneous efforts by professors in the university of science and technology, based on the idea that 28)WAC program is various. Specifically, this paper proposes to designate an experiment subject, which is one of required subjects, as a writing intensive subject first. After that, this study suggests to create spontaneous WAC program which includes workshop conducted by professors, an intensive course to teach writing experimental reports, education for teaching assistants to train tutors, and peer feedback among students. Further task will be developing WAC program through nurturing WAC steering committee and writing center based on understanding and supports from the university headquarters.
