이 논문은 ‘흥미’가 개별 학생 차원에서 교과 학습목표 달성에 효과적인 수단 정도로 한정되는 방식을 문제로 의식하며, 그에 내재한 교육 본질적 가치에 대해 듀이 교육론을 통해 탐구한 것이다. 먼저 듀이가 당대의 전통적·진보적 교육 논쟁에서 흥미 관련 통념들을 비판하며 체계적으로 이론화한 흥미의 유형과 전형적인 발달의 질서에 대해 살펴본다. 여기서 ‘신체적 흥미’, ‘조작적 흥미’, ‘과학적 흥미’라는 순차적으로 발달하는 흥미의 유형들과 이 세 가지 흥미가 발달하는 과정에서 지속적인 동력으로 작용하는 ‘사회적 흥미’를 구분 짓고 각각의 특징을 해명한다. 다음으로 흥미 발달 원리에 따른 실천을 통해 추구하는 교육의 목적은 개인적 차원에서 창조적 자유인과 사회적 차원에서 민주적인 공동체 형성임을 재조명한다. 결론적으로, 듀이 철학에서 궁극적으로 지향하는 창조적 민주주의 가치란 다양한 개인들의 흥미가 공존하고 상호작용함으로써 흥미의 종적, 횡적 발달을 지속시켜가도록 하는 교육적 상황을 통해 점진적으로 실현 가능한 것임을 논한다.

It has become one of the commonly shared educative principles that children`s interests should be taken seriously for ensuring meaningful classroom practices; however, its actual uses appear limited solely to the instrumental purpose as efficient means for learning and instruction of school subject-matters. In view of searching for genuinely educative meanings and values underlying the principle of interest, this essay explores Dewey`s philosophical discussion of interest focused on his notions of developing interests and the educational aims. It is shown that according to Dewey, there are four types of interest to be noted distinctively with respect to educational concerns, that is, ``physical interest``, ``manual interest``, ``scientific interest``, and ``social interest.`` The first three of them, physical, manual, and scientific interests are to grow gradually corresponding to children`s typical developmental stages, whereas social interest is to function to penetrate into and enhance the overall developing process. Finally, based on the analyses of educational aims underlying Dewey`s principle of developing interests, the two aims are distinguished. They are the creative and free individual and the democratic community.
