본 연구는 4년제 대학교에 재학한 상담전공 만학도가 학부과정에서 어떤 경험을 하는 지를 알아보기 위해 수행되었다. 이를 위해서 합의적 질적연구법(CQR)으로 4년제 대학교 학부과정에 재학한 상담전공 만학도 17명을 심층면접하고 그 자료를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 최종적으로 7개의 영역과 48개의 범주로 분류되었다. 상담전공 만학도의 입학 동기 영역은 외부지지와 자극, 삶에 대한 자기보상, 내면탐색, 사회활동, 연령대비 도전해 볼만한 영역 등 다양한 것으로 나타났다. 이들은 전문성확보, 자아실현 등에 대한 기대와 열망을 갖고 있었지만 주로 학습에 대한 어려움, 학습시간 부족, 기대보다 낮은 성적, 소수자로서의 소외감 등에서 어려움을 경험하였다. 이런 어려움에도 배움에 대한 즐거움, 배운 지식 적용, 동료와 교수의지지 등에서 의미있는 경험을 하였으며, 자기이해와 변화, 자기효능감의 상승, 가족관계 변화 등에서는 삶의 변화를 경험한 것으로 나타났다. 학부과정 개선점은 실습과 수강과목에서의 커리큘럼 개선을 꼽았고, 대부분 졸업 후에는 대학원진학이나 상담기관에서 일하는 것을 희망하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 상담전공 만학도 및 학부과정 상담자 양성에 대한 논의를 제시하였다.

This study was conducted to examine the experiences mature students majoring in counselling at four-year universities undergo. The in-depth interviews using Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) of 17 mature students enrolled at four-year universities were analyzed. Finally according to the analysis, 7 domains and 48 categories were found as follows. In the domain of motivation, categories had a variety of outside support & impetus, self-compensation regarding life, inner exploration (understanding self), social activity (self-exploration), and areas for challenge according to one`s age and so on. They had an expectations and desires for obtaining expertise and self-actualization, having an experience of difficulties and frustration, lack of time for studying, difficulties in studying, lower-than-expected grades and feeling of alienation as minority at four-year universities undergo. Having an experience of difficulties, they had an meaningful experience of support from colleagues and professors, application of learned knowledge and joy of learning. They had an experience of life change for enhancing self-efficacy, self-understanding and change and changes in relationship with family and so on. They had hope to improvements in curriculum with Practice and Course subjects. After graduated, they had hope to studying at graduate schools, operating counselling center. Based on this result, suggestions regarding mature students majoring in counselling and development of counsellors for undergraduates were proposed.
