본 연구의 목적은 조손가정 조모가 경험하는 심리적 현상을 연구함으로써 이들의 심리적 현상의 본질과 의미를 파악하는 것이다. 이로써 조손가정 조모 삶의 질 향상을 돕고 이들을 위한 상담의 기초자료를 제공하고자 한다. 우리나라 조손가정 10가정 중 8가정 이상이 한조부모가정이고 그 가운데 조모와 손자녀로 이루어진 가정이 65%에 이르러 손자녀 양육이 주로 조모에 의해 이루어지고 있다. 가족 구성원 모두 경제활동이 불가능하여 대부분이생계를 전적으로 정부나 공공기관의 지원에 의존하고 있는 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 서울시에 거주하는 국민기초생활수급대상 조손가정의 65세 이상 조모 10명을 대상으로 2회에서 3회의 심층면담을 실시하여 자료를 수집하고, Colaizzi의 현상학적 연구방법을 적용하여 분석하였다. 그 결과 133개의 구성의미와 38개의 주제 그리고 11개의 주제군이 도출되었다. 연구 결과는 손자녀 돌봄의 배경, 조손가정 조모의 심리적 현상 특성, 조손가정 조모의 손자녀 돌봄의 심리적 자원으로 구분하여 제시하였다. 조손가정 조모가 경험하는 심리적 현상의 중심현상은``나를 희생하여 손자녀 살리기``이고, 조손가정 조모 인생의 기조를 이루는 정서는 한(恨)으로 밝혀졌다. 조손가정 조모가 손자녀 돌봄을 결정하게 된 직접적 요인은 손자녀에 대한 책임감이었으며, 이는 조손가정 조모에게 내재된 혈연중심적 가치관과 손자녀를 불쌍히 여기는 마음에서 기인된 것임이 드러났다. 조손가정 조모가 손자녀를돌보며 경험하는 심리적 현상 특성은 돌봄의 한계로 인한 고통, 삶에 대한 좌절감, 손자녀를 삶의 연장으로 생각, 손자녀를 위해 인내하고 추스름, 돌봄의 심리적 보상감, 현실 수용과 삶의 통합 등으로 밝혀졌다. 조손가정 조모가 손자녀 돌봄을 지속할 수 있는 물질적·정서적 자원은 정부지원과 이웃의 돕는 손길 등의 외적 자원과 조모자신이 가진 심리 내적 자원이었다.

The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning and the essence of the psychological phenomena experienced by custodial grandmothers while they raise grandchildren. Furthermore, this study is to provide useful resources to counsel custodial grandmothers. The research was conducted by interviewing 10 custodial grandmothers supported by National Basic Living Security in Seoul. Two to three times of face-to-face in-depth interviews with the custodial grandmothers were taped and analyzed by using Colaizzi``s phenomenological approach Briefly, the core psychological phenomenon of the custodial grandmothers is ``self-sacrifice to raise grandchildren``. The fundamental emotion of the custodial grandmother is ``Han; resentment`` and the main reason of caring grandchildren is responsibility for their grandchildren. Second, the characteristics of psychological phenomena experienced by the custodial grandmothers are financial, physical and emotional limitations, which synergistically bring grieve to them. Although they feel devastated, the custodial grandmothers identify themselves as their grandchildren and believe that they can extend their lives to their grandchildren. Third, the resources of psychological and financial supports are from internal and external supports. The custodial grandmothers experience external support from the governmental financial support and neighbor`s emotional supports, which enable them to care their grandchildren and accept their reality. They also have internal resources to encourage themselves, such as religious belief. Their religious believes encourage them to have dreams in their current and future status. Therefore, they can do their best for the rest of their lives while they also prepare their death.
