본 연구에서는 우리나라 중고등학생이 상담을 어떻게 개념화하고 있는지를 검토하고자 하였다. 그 리고 상담의 개념화가 성별 및 중고 학생 간에 어떠한 차이가 있는지를 밝혀보려고 하였다. 중고등 학생의 상담에 대한 개념을 측정하기 위하여 본 연구에서는 인터뷰 방법을 사용하였다. 인터뷰를 위한 질문지를 작성하였으며, 인터뷰 질문지는 2개 부분으로 구성하였다. 첫 번째 부분은 응답자의 인적사항에 관한 문항으로서 참여자의 학교 급(중학교 혹은 고등학교), 고등학교생의 경우 학교의 유형(인문계 혹은 전문계), 학년, 그리고 성별을 포함시켰다. 두 번째 부분은 인터뷰를 위한 문항으로서 상담에 대한 경험 탐색의 2개 문항(상담이란 말을 들어본 적이 있는가? 상담을 받아 본 적이 있는가?)과 상담 개념 탐색을 위한 4개 문항(상담이라는 말을 들으면 떠오르는 단어 3개는? 상담은 무엇이라고 생각하는가? 상담은 어떤 경우에 이루어진다고 생각하는가? 상담에서는 어떤 일이 일어 날 것으로 생각하는가?)으로 구성하였다. 본 연구에 참여한 면접 교사의 수는 57명이었으며 학생의 수는 총 505명이었다. 참여 학생의 성별 및 학교 급별 분포는 여학생 246명, 남학생 259명, 그리고 중학생 267명, 고등학생 238명이었다. 수집된 자료는 빈도분석과 교차분석을 활용하여 분석하였다. 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 중고등학생은 상담을 ‘성적이나 진로 및 진학을 중심으로 고민이나 문제가 있을 때 선생님과 대화를 통하여 그 고민이나 문제를 풀어가는 과정’으로 개념화하였다. 성 별과 학교 급별 간에는 대동소이하였다. 연구결과와 관련하여 시사점을 제시하였다.
The purpose of the study was to examine the meaning of counseling which junior high and high school students had in Korea and also to examine the differences in the meaning of counseling between male and female students, and between junior high and high school students. The study used an interview method to collect the data. The questionnaire for the interview was developed, which consisted of 6 items(Have you ever heard of the word ‘counseling’?, Have you ever taken counseling?, What are three words associated with counseling?, What do you think counseling means? When do you think counseling is necessary?, What do you think will be happening in the counseling?). The participants of the study were 57 junior high and high school teacher interviewers and 505 junior high and high school students. The data collected were analyzed using frequency analysis and χ² of the SPSS 14.0 version. The results of the study were as following. The students described counseling as process of solving problems relating with academic achievement and career/movement into upper level of education through talking with school teachers. The differences between female and male students and junior high and high school students were generally not significant with some exceptions. It was implied that professional counselors and scholars in counseling should understand the students` meaning of counseling sincerely to facilitate their behavior toward counseling.
